Years ago I learn who was really in control of my life in spite of my behavior. I also discovered that the person that was in control of my life also gave me choices to make that ultimately determine the outcome of my life. Let me tell you a short story that happened to me over thirty years ago.
I arrived in New York City as I often had with one thing on my mind, party. New York City is one of those few cities in the world where you can party around the clock in places you could not even imagine. On this trip I decided to travel by myself leaving my entourage in Tampa. My plan was to spend at least ten days there in a party bliss.
Into my third day of this very sinful trip I met two guys in one of the clubs I had visited and I shortly discovered that they both had recently been release from prison. These two ex-felons had one thing in mind, party. In the course of the first three days they understood that I was really alone in New York City and that I had no intentions of making contact with any one in town.
Right about the seventh day of my continued party atmosphere, one mixed with alcohol, drugs and women companionship, I could not go continue without at least one good night of rest. So I invited the guys to make the pit stop with me for at least a few hours.
That evening shortly after we arrived at the hotel, I took a bath and had intended to go straight to bed. But what happened next was totally far from my control. As I came out of the bathroom with my pajamas, on I sat on the bed and without any notice or any human explanation, I heard this audible voice that said to me " if you go to sleep you will die". This voice was so real that my eyes suddenly were aware of my surroundings and I realize that the two guys in my hotel room were encouraging me to go to sleep, they said that that they were going to stay up and watch a little television.
So real was this voice that instead of going to sleep I told one of the guys that I was hungry, and asked him if he could go get me some Chinese food. I gave him fifty dollars and off he went. When he was gone I ask the second fellow if he could go and get me a pack of cigarettes and so he did. These guys realized that I was carrying thousands of dollars in cash and a hold lot of cocaine, about twenty thousand dollars' worth. Apparently they had planned to kill me to get to the cash and the drugs.
As soon as the second guy left I immediately packed my bags and exited the hotel in a hurry and via a New York City taxi I headed to the airport. It had dawn on me that these guys were acting very strange when I had come out of the bathroom and had come short of rocking me to bed. In my drunken state of mind God had been able to warn me of the danger that I was facing.
Now stop and think, I am a heathen who had barely slept in seven days and to make things worst I had been impaired by drugs and alcohol. Yet He who is in control of the universe interrupted my state of mind and warned me of the danger I was in. If I had chosen to stay and not discern the voice that had spoken so clearly to me, I may not been around to write this article.
The God of the universe is interested in every detail of our lives and he constantly works things for our good, even if we are not paying attention. Many have died at the hands of evil men and women, simply because they did not obey that voice that wants to lead our lives for good.
There was another time that I was staying in a Ramada Inn in my home town of Tampa. I was going through some real tough times. It was about three o'clock in the morning and I was contemplating suicide. With a bible and a 38 special on the bed I was crying out to God for help. Now when I look back I can see how close I was to death as the powers of darkness were battling for the control of my will.
Suddenly without notice I hear this voice that says in an audible voice "go to church". So real was this voice that I got dress and headed to the only church I knew, my neighborhood Catholic Church.
When I arrived at the church at 3:30 in the morning I reached for the big wooded door in almost pitch black ambiance. This was the only church that I had ever known, it was the church at which I had taken catechism and visited every Easter and Christmas. When I reach for the door in was closed and I turn my back on the door and said to myself, "why would they close the doors to the church if God lives in there?" As I took a few steps forward to leave, I heard this voice that said "turn around and pull both doors", so I turned around and pulled both doors and the doors of the church came opened.
I made my way to the pews in the dark and kneelt and cried out to God in desperation. As I prayed in the only way I knew how, I heard someone come in through the back doors. In a moment of time, someone taped my shoulders and shined the flash light on my face. I turned around and it was the police. One of the two policeman shouted in a loud voice "what are you doing here" and I responded back " what do you think, I need help".
They took me outside and frisk me and ask the priest what he wanted to do with me and he said to them "let him go". I left the church that morning knowing someone else was in control of my life even though I was messing it up terribly. The lesson that we all should know is that God is in control of our lives, but we still get to make the choices, whether for good or for bad.
