The job of a paralegal is extremely busy and complex, and requires a broad skill set. Here are ten of the most important skills a paralegal should possess in order to be good at their job.
Excellent written and oral communication. A paralegal is required to speak and correspond with a diverse group of people. They must be able to adapt to the needs of those with whom they are working, and always maintain clear and professional communication.
Strong attention to detail. A paralegal is responsible to ensure that all the tiny details of a case or file are handled properly. The attorney will look at the "big picture" of a file, but the paralegal is the one who crosses all the t's and dots the i's.
Excellent research and analytical skills. Paralegals will complete the majority of research required for client files, through a variety of mediums. A paralegal must learn how to sift through massive amounts of data to pick out one or two details that are relevant and important for their case.
Ability to multitask. Because law firms handle more than one case at a time, a paralegal must be able to juggle the responsibility of multiple cases and requirements at one time, without sacrificing quality.
Work well under pressure. There will be times when a paralegal is faced with deadlines that are coming faster than they would like, or think they can handle. In those cases, it is essential that the paralegal be able to handle the stress of what is required without losing the ability to concentrate or produce quality work because of the pressure.
Strong computer and word processing skills. Most of a paralegal's job will be completed at a computer, and will involve typing. The faster a paralegal is able to produce and compile documents, the better. A paralegal should have excellent typing skills, and should not be afraid to practice their typing skills during off-time, to improve their work performance.
Strong written communication skills. A paralegal will often be called upon to compose correspondence to clients, witnesses, and other members of the legal profession, and will be expected to produce high quality work. Depending on their experience and expertise, they may also be asked to author initial drafts of certain legal documents, and must be comfortable with this style of writing in order to deliver the quality of work that is expected.
The ability to see and handle tiny details while simultaneously maintaining "big-picture" awareness. The paralegal should always have a general idea of what is going on with a case, and what the desired goal of that case is. They should be able to always keep that in mind while also making sure that all the small details involved in the case are managed properly.
A strong work ethic. A paralegal may be required to work long hours. There may be times when they are required to allow their work to take precedence over their personal life, or when they need to spend personal time researching or reviewing precedent in order to fully understand all the components of a case.
Excellent proof-reading skills. A paralegal needs to be able to skim documents quickly, and spot and correct any mistakes. This holds true both for work that they produce, and documents that others have produced that are included in the file. The paralegal is responsible for making sure all elements of a file are managed correctly, and every piece is completed properly and without errors.
