Author Name: Diecasting Zinc
One of the most discussed advantages of die casting over other metalworking processes is economy. However, such pecuniary advantage is not obtainable to manufacturers and users of zinc parts in a silver platter. There is a need to formulate a pricing cost model that integrates applicable factors.
Die Cast Zinc Part Prices
Pricing in die casting are dictated by a set of factors. On one hand are the geometry of the zinc parts and the tolerance requirements. On the other are die, die casting tooling, and processing costs. Prices are, therefore, relative to the interaction of the first set of factors with the second set.
To illustrate, molds or dies should contain few moving parts as much as possible. In this regard, the direction of the mold closure and the parting surface are crucial. Moreover, the part should be easy to eject or release from the mold. In terms of metal flow, the factors to consider are smooth pathway and resistance to flow. To minimize cycle time and the time required for solidification, thin walls with uniform dimensions are more desirable than walls with different dimensions.
Additionally, quality requirements for the particular die cast part are considered as a subsidiary factor with respect to the costs identified (i.e., from the first paragraph). However, these cost elements are primarily influenced, in varying degrees, by the following factors:
Geometry of the part;
The material, which in this case is the zinc-aluminum alloy; and
Dimensions of the part.
Die Cast Tooling
The addition of aluminum to zinc allows the use of ferrous die casting tooling . Die casting equipment, however, generally costs higher but offers higher cycle time. Moreover, die casting molds also command higher prices.
The economics of die casting, therefore, is a matter of striking the balance between the advantages and limitations of its use . The costing model is not a one-size-fits-all framework. In deciding to acquire more expensive tooling, a company appears to be spending more. Come to think of it, the same company is opening more opportunities to serve their clientele with a more extensive gamut of shapes and components than it is ever possible with other metalworking processes . Die cast zinc parts also last longer.
From the hindsight, if die casting is a losing proposition for both manufacturers and users of zinc die cast parts, it would not have survived very long and still emerged as one of the top metalworking processes to date . In the manufacturing sector, cost is clearly just a pawn in the much larger game of market supremacy. Companies should be able to address the needs of their clientele or lose patronage. What do you think?
