Self employment defined.
Self employment is defined as "the act of generating one's income directly from a consumer as opposed to being an employee of a business (or person)". This definition comes from Wikipedia.
I decided to try self employment, when I got laid off three years ago.
I had been a retail manager with a company for thirteen years. Then they decided to change the structure of the company and I was sent to a new location.
Because there had been rumors that this particular store might close, I prepared myself. A year and a half after I got there, it indeed closed.
I was offered a couple of other positions, all of which paid less than what I was making. One was actually the same position, at another location, but still less money.
I realized that they wanted me to stay, but at there pay, not mine. Self employment was looking pretty good.
I decided to take my package and cash in all my PTO hours (thank goodness I didn't use them all, like they wanted), and leave.
I had fun there, met alot of great people and learned alot about business, but I had worked my butt off in the process and was not going to continue to do so without the proper pay!
Self employment, is it for you?
I had thought about getting another job, but I always came back to self employment. It was always what I wanted to do.
If I was going to work 40-60 hours a week, it might as well be for myself.
I didn't take it lightly, I had to really consider the consequences of working for myself. Self employment means just that, you are doing it all, yourself.
I found that working for myself and by myself was okay, and all the questions that you normally get asked, when thinking about self employment worked out and I was good to get started.
I realize that some of you jump intothis without asking yourself some simple questions of whether or not this is for you.
I came across an article from nextavenue.org, by Vanessa Richardson, that gives you eight questions to think about before you jump into self employment.
Those questions........
1. Are you fearless? The most successful people have a high tolerance for risk. They don't think about failing all the time, and if they do fail, they try something else.
2. Do you need to get paid regularly? Sit down and think about what you need to keep you going. I was okay for a while, when I got laid off, because I had my own savings, on top of the package they gave me and the cash from my PTO. Really focus on saving about 6-8 months worth of expenses to assist you.
3. Do you need a daily routine? Small business owner, Jennifer Wang says that if you have to know what tomorrow will bring, self employment is not for you.
4. Do you need to get praised for your work? You must be a cheerleader for yourself, because no one else is there to do it. If you need someone to do it for you, don't even think about self employment.
5. Do you have the manager mentality? Are you okay with being in charge? If you have to have someone tell you what to do, this is not for you.
6. Do you have discipline? You need to be able to organize your day and get things done.
7. Ready to work 24/7? Starting a business doesn't mean that you'll be relaxing. You must think about it all the time.
8. Do you have support from family? Starting a business is fine when you are single, with no kids. You can do what you want and you are in charge of your finances. When you have a family however, it's a little different. If your family doesn't support what you're doing, there is no way that it will work.
Self employment or not?
I think the main thing with self employment is trying to find the business that you should start. I chose a networking company. That may not be for you.
Self employment is not for everyone, so do a self analysis and see where you stand.
