Most forklift operator job descriptions will vary based on the company offering the position, the type of industry for that company, the type of machinery the driver will be operating, and the location of the job. However, most forklift operator jobs will require the same basic descriptions. After comparing many job descriptions, below you will find a typical forklift operator job description regardless of the factors mentioned above.
Physical Requirements: A typical forklift operator job will entail spending the majority of the day either standing or sitting (depending on the vehicle model) on a motorized vehicle, using hand and foot controls to maneuver large and/or heavy loads of material. Though this may appear on the surface to be a very simple job, the position can be quite demanding. A job like this requires a strong sense of balance, excellent hand-eye coordination, and great attention to detail. Excellent eyesight (natural or corrected) is also a must for a forklift operator, as they must be able to clearly see where they are going and will often have to navigate the lift on high shelving, or while reversing.
Forklift operation is typically very repetitive in nature, involving driving a large vehicle, often at a slow pace. However, there may be times when items cannot be moved by a forklift, generally because of size or space constraints. When this occurs, a forklift operator must be prepared and willing to bend, kneel, crouch, or crawl as necessary to retrieve the material. Operators may also be required to carry objects, which may often be very heavy, to the appropriate destination.
Forklift operators may also be in charge of maintaining written logs of merchandise movements and location. They may be called upon to create pallets of merchandise which involves reading an order sheet, compiling all the necessary components of a completed pallet, and stacking the requested merchandise on a pallet. Forklift operators must be able to read, write, and think critically to successfully complete all aspects of the job.
Weather & Temperature Conditions: Forklift operators are needed to work in a variety of conditions, not all of them pleasant. Even if the operators daily work is located in a warehouse, that warehouse may or may not be climate controlled, and temperatures could get uncomfortably high in warm months, or uncomfortably low in cold months. If you accept a position outside, you would be subject to the weather and temperature extremes that occur in that area.
Work Hours & Shift Requirements: Forklift operator positions will typically be looking for operators that are willing to work eight hour shifts or longer. Keep in mind, these positions may not necessarily be during normal business hours. In many cases, forklift operators work for a company in which customers are present during business hours so the heavy lifting and moving must be completed after-hours. There are also many warehouses that operate 24 hours a day, requiring operators to be willing to work overnight shifts.
Safety & Awareness: The Fair Labor Standards Act defines forklift operation as a "hazardous occupation", the most important quality of a forklift operator is a commitment to safety and training. A forklift operator must always be aware of his surroundings, and must always observe all Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations, and always use safe operating practices. All forklift operators are responsible for inspecting the forklift prior to use, and ensuring all components are in proper working order and safe for use.
