Forklift training consists of three separate and distinct parts:
1) Formal training
2) Practical training
3) Evaluation
All three of these components must be completed in order for a forklift driver to meet the necessary federal regulations to operate a forklift.
Formal training is the classroom portion of the training. In order to meet OSHA requirements, formal training must include a combination of text, video, and lecture. This is usually completed in a classroom setting, though it can be completed online as well. Full formal training usually takes only a few hours, typically between four and eight. Formal training culminates in a written, multiple-choice test. Once you have passed this test, you have obtained a forklift operator's license, and are ready to move on to the next phase of training.
Practical training is the hands-on portion of training. This type of forklift training involves operating the forklift(s) you will be using in a controlled, supervised setting. Even though the formal training for all forklifts is generally the same, the practical training will vary based on the vehicle you are driving. Your trainer should make sure you have used all the forklifts you will be using in your job, and that you are comfortable with each one before allowing you to use them in an unsupervised setting.
The third and final portion of forklift training is the evaluation. This is where your trainer or another qualified supervisor observes your handling of the forklift vehicle, and determines if you are ready and able to complete the job requirements in a safe and efficient manner. Your ability to obey all safety regulations and practices, maneuver within your workspace, and operate the lift mechanism will all be evaluated. Your trainer is responsible for making sure they have evaluated your performance on every vehicle you will be expected to use, and have provided additional training or corrections if necessary.
Once all three of these steps have been completed, you will have fulfilled all federal OSHA forklift training regulations, and you should be ready to begin operating a forklift on your own!
