Operating a forklift is considered by the Fair Labor Standards Act to be an "occupational hazard". This is due to the fact that forklifts, when not operated correctly, can be very unstable vehicles, making them extremely dangerous. As with any type of large motorized vehicle, accidents are bound to happen. However, a majority of these accidents can be prevented simply by adhering to OSHA safety guidelines. Below we have listed some of the potential dangers of operating a forklift, both daily and long term.
Potential Equipment Dangers: Forklifts are fairly unstable vehicles, care must always be taken to ensure the vehicle is not driven in a reckless or unsafe manner. Forklift stability can be negatively altered by having an improperly loaded or carried load; if the load is too high, or the center of gravity is not centered with the vehicle, the forklift is much more likely to tip. Seated forklifts can be especially dangerous if their load is carried too high, as the counterbalance in the back of the vehicle will tip the vehicle backwards.
Forklift operators can be put at risk of physical injury if the vehicle they are operating is not properly maintained. Incorrect tire pressure, low battery, or improper fluid levels can all result in forklift accidents if left uncorrected. This is one of the reasons why formal forklift operator training is required in order to obtain a forklift certification.
Traffic Dangers: In locations where multiple forklifts are used simultaneously, there is always a risk of crashing into another forklift. Operators can combat this risk by driving at the posted speed limit, blowing their horn whenever they come to an aisle intersection, and by knowing the stopping distance of their vehicle.
Health Dangers: Forklift operators may be exposed to harmful fumes or dangerous weather environments, depending on their location and the type of materials they are handling. Employers and operators must work together to ensure that all proper safety procedures are followed and that employees have received proper forklift training for handling potentially hazardous materials.
Most injuries to forklift operators happens while getting on and off the forklift. All operators should practice taking care when getting on and off the vehicle to ensure they are stepping on solid, non-slip surfaces. Operators should always use the proper lifting techniques when having to physically lift and carry heavy items and always wear protective eyewear when in warehouses and around machinery.
Long-Term Health Dangers: Forklift operators that have operated vehicles for a long period of time may find themselves experiencing chronic or permanent health problems because of the repetitive body motions involved in forklift operation. These problems include neck or back issues, from looking backward while reversing, or constantly looking up while placing merchandise; spinal issues relating to the bouncing or shaking of the vehicle while in motion; or wrist problems such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, caused by repetitive grasping of the control knobs.
