Do I Need a Forklift Certification?

You don't have to be a certified forklift operator in order to obtain a job as operating a forklift. OSHA only requires that employers ensure an employee has received the required training and has been evaluated prior to operating the forklift or other industrial vehicle without supervision. Failure on the part of the company to ensure that all their employees are fully operating within the scope of OSHA regulations opens the company for the possibility of disciplinary action from OSHA, as well as civil or legal liability in the event of an accident by an operator who has not been properly trained, or who is known to disregard proper operating procedures and safety practices.

Obtaining a forklift certification prior to applying for a job as a forklift operator could make you a more desirable candidate for the position. However, a lack of certification does not necessarily mean a company will not hire you. If you are considering becoming certified before applying for a position, make sure to check with the companies in your area with whom you intend to submit applications. They will advise you if they require all potential candidates to hold valid operating licenses, or if they are willing to train or assist with the cost of training a new employee towards certification.

Some companies may even prefer a candidate who does not have prior experience or training, as they would then be able to start from the beginning and train the employee according to their own specific standards and procedures. Don't let a lack of current certification prevent you from applying for forklift operator jobs! Instead, you may want to let your potential employer know that you are willing and able to obtain a forklift certification on your own prior to beginning work, if that is a condition of employment.

It is important to note, however, that though you may be able to obtain a position as a forklift operator before you have completed the training, you should never attempt to operate a forklift before you have completed both the formal certification training, and the hands-on training that is required by OSHA's safety standards. This will help protect you against accident or injury due to inexperience, and will also safeguard both you and your employer against liability in the event an accident does occur.
