A forklift operator training class is usually recommended, and often provided, by employers and companies that employ forklift operators. A typical, standard forklift training class is usually four hours long. Upon completion of the four hour class you will be given a standard, written certification test (this may vary based on location and which company is offering the training). Be sure to check on this with all companies that provide training near you so you know what to expect, and what may be required.
Generally speaking, a forklift certification class can be completed locally and will cost anywhere from $75.00 to $200.00, depending on the location and the company offering the training. These classes, like online certification classes, may only include formal training (i.e. handbooks, guides, etc) which may not offer the practical, hands-on training required by OSHA standards. However, many companies that offer certification classes will offer hands-on training classes, as well, for an additional fee. Again, this will vary by location and company, so be sure to find out what type(s) of training is offered at the location where you choose to take the certification class. Hands-on training may also be offered at the place of employment, either by a training supervisor or another experienced forklift operative, if a hands-on training class is not available in your area.
Where can I go to take a forklift training class?
The first step is to do an online search for forklift/industrial truck training in your area and find out which companies offer forklift operator training. Another way to find a place that offers training is to do a search for companies that sell or rent forklifts and other industrial trucks, as the majority of these companies will also offer hands-on operator training classes and may even require training in order to rent a vehicle. You may also be able to take classes for forklift certification at your local community or technical college.
One thing to remember is that if you are currently working, or about to begin work as a forklift operator, your employer may already have a place in mind where they would like you to complete your training. Make sure you check with your supervisor to ensure you are not going to be wasting time and money on training that is outside the scope of what the company wants.
