In the past, it was traditional to allow elders to make all the big decisions in their integral role as guardian of the youth. But as time went on, children and adolescents have learned that they too have a voice of their own and that they have the ability to impart wisdom and clarity originating from their own experiences. It's the power of independence and adequate self-confidence that allows them to participate in world-wide endeavors.

As opposed to rebellion, which disregards the aid of parents and other adults, youth empowerment refers to a deep sense of responsibility, shared with grown-ups, acknowledged by the young generation as they too have a say in decision-makings that affect them.

In the road to gaining self-accomplishment, the main objective of youth empowerment is for young people to achieve social, economic, and cultural development. Silencing the youth is a form of exclusion through intersecting groups based on race, status quo, and sexual orientation that generates negative points of view.

Enabling the young people to create action on their own terms would involve application and dissemination of peace and democracy, sufficient resources, political will, equality, right to information and skills, and a constructive value system. Significant participation by educational institutions, local and national government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and community groups will uplift the role of young people in facing challenges and providing reliable solutions to today's problems.

Youth empowerment acknowledges the young generation as community-building forces and problem-solvers today and as leaders tomorrow. As a collective effort between the young and old generations, young people should be able to enhance the ability of understanding societal circumstances including the importance and practicality of a specific project. Consequently, the government should be able to provide programs that will enhance leadership and performance-based skills such as Scouting, National Youth Rights Association, and Youth Model Governments among others.

Activities that focus on youth development include youth rights, youth councils, youth media, and youth activism must be encouraged. The youth rights movement aims to advocate fairness by addressing issues regarding oppression such as verbal abuse, child labor, drinking, smoking, drug abuse, and crime. Awareness of these subject matters leads to the formulation of laws that encompass voting age, curfews, right to work laws, age of consent, and child labor laws to name a few.

Youth councils have been around since the early Contemporary Period for the main purpose of propagating consultative bodies at various government levels. Youth media pertains to the distribution of information and all kinds of action planned and executed by young people through various forms of media such as television advertisements, magazines, newspapers, and websites that empower young people to voice out their concerns regarding youth violence and human rights.

Various organizations have been supporting anti-racism, anti-abortion, and anti-homophobia. Education is a primary call to awareness and active participation of the youth. Student activist movements vary in size and topics from public to private schools. Their emphasis lies in student rights, school funding, tuition fee upsurges, struggles of campus workers, drug policy reform, and others.

Youth empowerment prioritizes youth violence prevention and awareness of health consequences caused by vehemence. More urgency is given to the low and middle-income countries that demand higher financial and environmental assistance.
