Against his master's wisdom, Shifu criticizes the concept of emancipating oneself from the illusion of control, which is the road to self empowerment. Hence, it presents a thought-provoking query to all those who seek illumination. Is optimism just a matter of genetic determinism or could it be a matter of independent will and a change of perspective?

Some people are so attached to the past that they allow themselves to be consumed by the misery and despise that which held them captive, thus preventing them from relishing the abundance of blessings surrounding them every day. Others, on the other hand, worry too much about what lies ahead that they accentuate the problem more than the solution.

An overused but highly imperative truism is that there's nothing like the present. Life is made of a series of moments, and now is the only time to act. Why? It's because the most important decisions are made in the present. It's the current choices and situations that determine how many values have been learned from one's past and how close he or she is to obtaining a perceived future.

Self empowerment is all about taking charge of one's life. It's the ability to trust in one's inner belief system and to take a stand for it even if it means defying the norm of society.

What could a person do in order to attain self empowerment? First, one must be open to reality and accept that there are external forces beyond his or her control. There would certainly be favorable moments and progress along the way, but there would also be moments of sadness and disappointment. It's important, though, to realize that beyond the circle of control is a force even more powerful residing within the mind, heart, and spirit of everyone. Nothing makes a man or woman more prevailing than nurturing his or her circle of influence.

But in order to achieve this, one must know what he or she hopes to accomplish and eliminate all things that don't support one's goal. There should be an idea with fortitude so strong that no amount of difficulty could abolish an individual's most profound principles.

Second, one must formulate a constructive belief system that highly encourages living an authentic and peaceful life. Therefore, it's important to differentiate happiness from inner peace. At the topmost position of the Hierarchy of Needs is Self-Actualization which very few ever find. It only happens when one is convinced that everything occurs for a reason, and that for every bad experience is a lesson about letting go of wrong perceptions and falsehood, an opportunity to learn humility, compassion, and understanding.

Happiness is the quick fix and comfort that one seeks when life becomes too arduous and cruel. Inner peace, on the other hand, is embracing everything that life has to offer from the most problematic situation to the highest level of contentment. Self empowerment eliminates the drama that the ego inflicts on every person and provides the individual with innermost harmony.
