Understanding Buddha Images and Buddhist Quotes
Millions of people around the world seek to gain enlightenment through Buddhist mediation and the teachings of Buddha, but if you are unfamiliar with the religion, you may be confused as to the principals of Buddhism. While many people consider it a religion, those who practice Buddhism see it more as a philosophy or a way of life. People who are committed to practicing Buddhism strive to:
Lead a moral life
Be aware of their thoughts and actions
Develop wisdom and understanding.
Buddhists generally lead a peaceful life as they seek out the path to enlightenment, which brings about true happiness.
Who was Buddha?
Gautama Buddha, or Siddhartha Gautama, is believed by most scholars to have been born in Nepal in 563 BCE (before common era). He was born into a royal Hindu family, the son of King Suddohdana, the leader of the Shakya clan. His mother was Queen Maha Maya, who was a Koliyan princess. However, he was raised by his mother's sister, his aunt, Maha Pajapati.
Even though he was born into a royal family, putting wealth at his disposal, he left behind his life of leisure at the age of 29 after seeing what the world was really like beyond the walls of the palace he was raised in. His father had always tried to keep him from seeing the poor and the suffering, so when he did, he became depressed. Another trip beyond the palace walls allowed him to meet an ascetic.
Ascetics live an austere life, often denying themselves worldly pleasures in the pursuit of religious or spiritual goals and as a way to gain physical and metaphysical health. Gautama left the palace and became an ascetic himself, begging for alms on the streets of Rajagsha. He studied both meditation and yoga and afterwards began to practice a severe from of asceticism and self-mortification, along with five others.
They eschewed worldly goods and pleasures, even to the extent that he ate no more than one leaf or nut per day. He nearly starved to death and, after almost drowning, Gautama began to reevaluate what he was doing. It was then he remembered a time as a child when his father was working on the season's plowing that he saw his father enter into a blissful and refreshing state of mind after mediating and focusing on his tasks.
The Beginnings of Buddha and Buddhism
Gautama began a more moderate path, realizing the way of jhana, that he saw his father doing, was the right way for him to lead his life. He was so emaciated and weakened that a village girl gave him milk and rice pudding, believing him to be a spirit, not a man. He was then seated under a Bodhi tree, and vowed to stay there until he found the truth. After 49 days of mediation, he is said to have attained Enlightenment and became known as Buddha to those who followed him.
At the time of his "Awakening" or Enlightenment, he realized insight into the causes of suffering and the ways to eliminate it. These discoveries lead to the "Four Noble Truths." These four truths are some of the more famous Buddha quotes and are the foundation for Buddhism:
All of life is marked by suffering.
Suffering is caused by desire and attachment.
Suffering can be stopped.
The way to stop suffering is to follow the Noble Eightfold path.
The Noble Eightfold Path shows a way to end suffering, but it is difficult to attain. Buddhist live monastic lives in order to try to follow this path, which they consider "true" or "correct", which is the way the word "right" should be considered in the Noble Eightfold Path.
Right knowledge
Right intention
Right speech
Right action
Right livelihood
Right effort
Right mindfulness
Right concentration
Another one of the Buddha quotes tells why he considered finding Enlightenment so important. "To enjoy good health, to bring true happiness to one's family, to bring peace to all, one must first discipline and control one's own mind. If a man can control his mind he can find the way to Enlightenment, and all wisdom and virtue will naturally come to him."
Buddha Images
There are many statues of Buddha and each reflect the area of the world from which they originated. The western world is most familiar with the fat, happy Buddha, or the 'Laughing Buddha' images from China. This depiction is not an image of the Gautama Buddha, but a Chinese Buddhist monk.
More realistic Buddha images come from India, which is close to Nepal, and features a thin Buddha sitting in the 'lotus' position, which is a yoga pose. Even these images vary depending on the region of Nepal or India where the image was made. In Mathura art traditions, the image depicts a Buddha with thicker lips, wide set eyes, long earlobes and prominent noses. Gandhara images show a Buddha with longer eyes, a sharp and better defined nose and a more angular chin, along with shorter ear lobes.
Though Buddha lived a life without worldly pleasures, the Buddha images from India, Tibet or Nepal are often ornate. They show Buddha sitting in ornate chairs with other Buddhist images surrounding him and often wearing voluminous robes. Other images show his life's story played out in stone or his ascendance to Enlightenment in sculpture or paintings.
Buddha Quotes
The practice of Buddhism is done worldwide and it is believed that there are over 200 million people who follow the teachings of Buddha. Many do not lead a monastic lifestyle and they may have a skewed idea of what Buddhism is, but from Buddha quotes, it would be hard to misunderstand what he stood for.
"We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts, we make the world." Buddha believed that by controlling the mind and actions, that suffering could be overcome. It would be overcome and peace and joy would be attained.
