Many species of water birds gather at the waterway mouth at this time of year and thanks to recent downpours the channel soon will break its bank, connect and create a substantial torrent with the sea. Schools of fish are spotted by eager water birds both large and small.
I was fascinated with the multicolored reflections in still water contrasting with dark shadows of paperbark trees. Limpid nebulous clouds made the late afternoon sunshine to produce a red-yellow air over every thing. To catch that orange vividness, I under painted the canvas with a thin wash of bright orange. Darkness were painted next before they changed, then pale regions followed by the vibrant reflections in the middle distance.
Dual dominant paperbark trees prominent and on either side of the subject were brushed on. This supplied a crucial lead through the picture, helped along with the reedy banks on either sides. The far-away cliff was included, somewhat misted by rising seaspray from distant waves.
While painting outs of doors, there are often distractions. The wind, irritating bugs or curious individuals asking the same tired queries. On this time I was interrupted by a family of squabbling crows, a species which seemed misplaced on this spot. The riot carried on. With study, however, the plein air artist is able to tune in with nature and overlook disturbances, as if the mind is quiet, study grows sharpened.
My orange under painting was starting to show through as flecks of glowing sunlight across the painting. White twisted trunks of paperbark trees were painted along with their mirror-like reflections in the placid glazed water. What is crucial now is how the color is administered. Dim areas will be light and transparent in contrast to the use of lights which will be viscous and opaque.
As day changed into twilight, the misty seaspray came down over the placid water. My painting was close to conclusion. The only thing that remained was the addition of a water bird to get a focus of attention. Certainly there were truly plenty to pick from. A clumsy pelican perhaps? Not a crow! In truth I could not resist but choose the wonderful white egret. This particular elegant bird with stilt-like legs tracking its prey contrasted effectively against the shaded reflections of paperbark trees.
