Part of success coaching involves paying it forward. Being a goal-oriented business owner also means being able to empower your employees to concentrate on their own goals in the work place. The ability to inspire employees is one of the greatest skills a business owner can poses but, few do. Below are nine simple ways that you can bring success coaching to the workplace.
1. Be generous with approval. Everyone wants it and it's one of the easiest things to give. Plus, appreciation from the owner goes a lot farther than you think. Praise every advancement that you see your team members make. Once you're comfortable praising one-on-one to an employee, try it in front of others.
2. Make your ideas theirs. People don't enjoy being told what to do. Instead of telling people what you want done; ask them in a way that will make them think they came up with the idea. "I'd like you to do it this way" can be "Do you think it's a good idea if we do it this way?"
3. Never chastise. No one, I mean no one, wants to hear that they did something wrong. If your looking for a de-motivator, this is it. Try looking for an indirect approach to get people to improve, learn from their mistakes, fix them and move on . Ask, "Do you think that was that the best way to approach the situation? Why not? Now your having a discourse about the solution; not pointing a finger.
4. Learning and career opportunities. Make sure you understand what the employees vision or ideas about their career are within your company. Let them know what you see as opportunities are possible if they are willing to develop. Help them lay out a plan of specific things to learn, skills to develop in order to progress towards their vision. Monitor at least annually.
5. Exciting and meaningful work. Make sure there is a clear and compelling mission for the company and each employee's position in the company. It is important that each employee has a clearly understood written job description, that is meaningful, and gives them a sense that they make a difference.
6. Being kept informed. Make sure staff are informed about work issues and have the opportunity to give input.
7. Take an employee to lunch once a week. Surprise them. Don't make an announcement that you are establishing a new policy. Literally walk up to one of your staff, and invite them to lunch with you. It's an easy way to remind them that you notice and appreciate their work. (Don't talk about you, get to know more about them and their life and how they view their job).
8. Give recognition and small rewards. Acknowledge someone at a company meeting about what they accomplished. Run contests or internals games and keep track of the results on a white board that everyone can see. Tangible rewards that don't cost a lot , try dinners, spa services, trophies or plaques.
9. Throw company parties. Doing things as a group go a long way. Have a company picnic, happy hour, birthday party. Organize events throughout the year to remind your staff that you are all in it together.
Another part of learning from success coaching is applying what you've learned. I'm sure you were probably an employee at some time in your career and wished the company you worked for included one or more of the above of the 9 above, so there is a very old saying: "Do unto others as you would have liked to be done unto you".
