Fast twitch muscle, that is. Sure I am, but I'm building a much high percentage of slow twitch muscle. Everyone can add muscle mass, and that muscle mass will be composed of both fast and slow twitch muscle, the percentage of one to the other holds fairly constant for each individual.
What are fast twitch and slow twitch muscles
Well, skeletal muscle in general is composed of bundles of individual muscle fibers called myocytes. An average person will have close to a 50/50 percent mix of slow twitch fast twitch fibers in most skeletal muscles. Slow twitch muscles are your endurance muscles.
Red vs. White: The appearance and structure of muscle fibers.
Since fast twitch muscle is anaerobic, glycolytic, it is "white" muscle that is the least dense in mitochondria and myoglobin. In general, a successful sprinter will have a much higher than average percent of fast twitch muscle (say, 80 %), while a successful marathon runner will have a much higher than average percent of slow twitch muscle (again, around 80 %). It's easier for fast twitch muscles to become slow twitch muscles, rather than the other way around.
Heart of a Sprinter
But, what if you're not blessed with a lot of fast twitch muscles? Are you confined to "slow twitch sports" if you want to be good? Not at all! While it's true that most top athletes show a predominance in the muscle type that best suits their sport, most of your results come from your training, including your ability to master form, your coordination, and your own natural desire to work hard and succeed. While muscle fiber type may be part of a great athlete's success, it's a poor indicator, on it's own, of performance. What factors really determine athleticism? Mental preparedness, proper nutrition and hydration, getting enough rest, and having appropriate equipment and conditioning. So keep doing what you love. You may never be the fastest, but you'll be faster than you were yesterday!
We would love to hear from you if you have any questions or comments.
