Braces are usually worn by boys and girls in their teenage years because their permanent teeth have just come in and the surrounding bones are most flexible during this time. So if you have a teenage son or daughter, you should take him or her to the orthodontist to have braces fitted in.
Braces can make teeth straight and good-looking; thus, enabling the wearer to be more beautiful and confident. They can efficiently enhance the appearance and function of the teeth. Anyway, there are various types of braces you should take into consideration.
Traditional metal braces or metal brackets are perhaps the most common type. These braces are made of metal brackets that are directly glued to the surface of the teeth. They are made from stainless steel which makes them long lasting and versatile.
They are connected with strong, thin metal wires with bracket slots. Small elastic bands hold these wires in the correct position. The gentle pressure on the metal wires causes the teeth to move.
Ceramic is another common material for braces. Ceramic braces are clear braces that are usually worn by older teenagers since they are less noticeable. They are quite similar to metal braces, except that they are made of ceramic material that has the same color as a tooth.
They blend in better with the teeth. They are also resistant to stains. However, those who drink coffee or smoke may eventually notice discoloration.
Lingual braces and invisible plastic trays are also ideal options for teenagers. Lingual braces are just like metal braces except that they are placed behind the teeth instead of the front. They correct bad bites and crooked teeth without being obvious to the sight.
However, lingual braces cannot be used to treat all kinds of teeth problems. So if your son or daughter have a complicated orthodontic case, it may not be ideal for him or her to choose this type of braces. Treatments and adjustments may also take longer compared to other braces. Furthermore, the costs involved may be higher.
Invisible plastic trays, on the other hand, use a mold for the teeth. Because the teeth move, the trays have to be changed on a regular basis.
It should be kept in mind that these trays can only move the teeth when they are worn as directed by the orthodontist. So if the wearer does not wear the tray as prescribed, it may take a while for his or her teeth to be corrected. Also, it should be noted that these trays may only correct mild to moderate orthodontic cases.
