Credit counseling is a popular topic. The same can be a voluntary endeavour, primarily for the education of a consumer i.e. financial education, debt settlement, credit repair, etc. It can also be a necessary requirement for specific forbearance application i.e. bankruptcy, foreclosure, loan, home loan, etc.
This article will discuss several FAQ s relevant to the same. This will serve as your primer. For more information, refer to other articles on the website or written by the same author.
What is credit counseling?
This is sometimes called debt counseling. The same is a quasi social service. In gist, a consumer contacts a subject matter expert. They will discuss several aspects of financial planning and debt settlement options. The goal is to better one's finances thru sound advice from an expert who is also an interested third party.
What does it mean to be a quasi-social service?
Quasi or semi means the same is half a social service. This is because the consumer pays a fee, albeit a minimal one. This industry is regulated by the government usually thru a government or private agency. For example, in the United States the principal agency that regulates credit counseling is the National Foundation of Credit Counselors (NFCC). The same is answerable to the Council on Accreditation (COA).
How is counseling conducted?
This depends on where you are. As a general rule there are three (3) ways to conduct a session i.e. in person, online, or phone. The important part here is that you and your co-borrower listen carefully and prepare yourself for the interview.
How do you prepare for an interview?
First, you must know your purpose. This way you streamline the interview. And you know what to prepare and ask. If you have several purposes, make sure to clarify your main purpose and your secondary purpose. Also, if you need counseling as a requirement, be sure to meet the minimum time spent. And get the appropriate certificate.
Second, you need to prepare your income and expense worksheet. This way your counselor and you can compute your capacity. And determine any way by which you can save income and/or skip on unnecessary expenses.
Third, be honest. You are not fooling anyone. This is because your ability to get out of debt must be based on real data. And any lender, bank or court will require you to show proof of income and expense.
How much is a session?
The answer depends. But the same is very minimal. This is because; most of these entities are non profit. And, considering the useful advice you will get, the opportunity cost is worth several times, than the actual cost.
How do you contact a credit counseling service?
The first thing you do is go to the website of the appropriate regulatory body. Second, you read thru some of the informative articles found therein. Next you look for the tab that directs you to a list of certified counseling providers. Contact at least one of the same and schedule an appointment. Tip: as much as possible contact a provider within your state.
