You could feel it coming now - the issue of increasing fossil fuel shortage has a smell of uncertainty that lingers into the air. And because of this, we folks have been busy with our thoughts looking for new, more efficient and much cheaper alternative fuel sources that we could turn to right now so we wouldn't have to arrive into that time when we already have nothing left. And by looking up, we found the best answer.
The sun is undeniably the best energy source we could (and should) tap into. Solar energy is the way to move forward into the future. Building solar panels (photovoltaic cells) on your own is quite easy and feasible. Panels using silicon materials may be more powerful in the outputs produced, but using what we have on our immediate surroundings will put us at the same levels with commercial solar power panels in the market these days since they are both created using the same principle. The best part of this activity would be having an increased awareness in utilizing solar energy.
Building solar panels greatly reduces the costs of solar energy projects for the home. Each panel is known to cost from $100 to $150, and since most households these days are already equipped with the needed tools for the project (particularly in building your own plywood box for the solar panels), then most likely you wouldn't have to spend more. You only need the basic tools by the way: drill, saw, and a screwdriver. When wiring the solar cells into your panel, and in working on your panels as well, you must have wire cutters, strippers, a solder, and soldering irons. In the finishing the final assembly, including the sealing processes, you need a Plexiglas/acrylic sheet, wood screws, wood glue and silicon caulks.
The solar panel is considered the base with which to attach your solar cells in a neat formation. Using plywood material is cheap, and at the same time it provides a rigid base for the whole contraption. Square wood dowels forming the sides of the box should make up a sturdy foundation for your Plexiglas. Introduce a fiberboard (an inch shorter on all the plywood box sides) as the base for gluing all the solar cells in formation.
The solar cells, connected together through soldering, must be attached into the fiberboard. Cells with attached ribbons or tabs eliminate the need to do extra soldering of the wires before positioning them into the fiberboard. Having 36 tabbed cells should do. Silicone caulk running on the center back of the cells secures it into the fiberboard. Note that smudges or fingerprints may affect the energy output of your solar panel project. Keep everything clean by using rubber/cloth gloves in handling the cells into their final places.
In the final assembly cut out the Plexiglas with the exact dimensions as your solar panel box. Note that the acrylic sheet must be screwed directly into the wood material to secure every solar panel. Should there be gaps in between, simply use any remaining silicone caulk to fill up the areas. There you go. Building solar panels is not that tough, is it?
