Chicago Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman fittingly is the architect of the franchise's second NHL championship in four years because he's named after the Stanley Cup.
When legendary NHL coach Scotty Bowman's wife, Suella, gave birth to a son in 1973, Scotty suggested they name their son Stanley after the NHL trophy because "we were trying to win a Cup. I had been to the Finals three times and never won a game."
Scotty, now a Blackhawks senior advisor, told the story Monday night on the ice in Boston while players celebrating their championship all around him. He said his son's middle name is "Glenn" because Hall of Fame goalie Glenn Hall had been his important player at his first coaching gig with the St. Louis Blues in 1968.
"But we called him Stanley Cup," Scotty said.
A few years after Stan was born, Scotty had to answer some questions about his family at the licensing bureau and Stan heard Scotty say his son's name was Stanley Glenn Bowman.
"He was down and he said, "Is my name not Stanley Cup anymore?" Bowman recalled. "I said, 'Yeah, it will always be Stanley Cup."
GAME 6: Toews wills Blackhawks to victory
However, the young Bowman's link to the Stanley Cup now goes well beyond his name because this was undeniably Bowman's Blackhawks team that won the 2013 Stanley Cup. When the Blackhawks won in 2010, Bowman was officially the team's general manager. But the team had been built by Dale Tallon, who was fired before it had a chance to show what it could do.
After the 2010 title, the Blackhawks' prospects for continued success were sabotaged by severe salary cap woes. Half the roster's players couldn't be kept, and Stan Bowman decided who stayed and who went.
It's clear today that he made the right decisions then and made key additions along the way to allow the Blackhawks to become the first team in the salary cap era to win two titles. It's impressive that Bowman was able to tear the team apart and then rebuild it into a championship team in four years.
Cynics will say that it was easier for Bowman because he already had Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane and a few other stars. That might be true, but other GMs have stars but haven't been able to surround them with the proper supporting cast.
That has been Bowman's strength. He primarily has made all of the right decisions regarding when it comes to personnel moves.
KANE: Strong finish wins him Conn Smythe
Last summer, some fans wanted Bowman to trade for another goalie, but Bowman liked Corey Crawford's potential and Crawford rewarded Bowman's faith by playing exceptional hockey through the postseason.
At the trade deadline, as teams were fighting for stars Jaromir Jagr, Jarome Iginla and Brenden Morrow, Bowman quietly acquired Michal Handzus to give his team another center. The critics said Handzus was slow and his best days were behind him, but he was a vital contributor, making some Toews-quality centering passes.
Brandon Saad was drafted under Bowman's watch and looks like he has the potential to be an NHL star.
Michael Frolik's acquisition in 2010-11 provided the team with another vital role player. With several defensemen available last summer, Bowman chose Michal Rozsival and he ended up getting some big assists in the Final.
Bowman's best move might have been trading for Johnny Oduya in 2011-12 and re-signing him. There were nights in the playoffs when Oduya was as important as Duncan Keith.
"If you have mobility on the back end, you have better than a decent chance," the elder Bowman said.
When people win multiple Stanley Cup titles, they almost always say the first was the best. But the guess here would be that this Stanley Cup was more meaningful for Stan Bowman because he did it his way. With two rings, Stan has a long way to go to catch his dad's nine wins as coach.
But he has lived up to both of his names.
