A Calgary Day Spa Is Great But You Can Take A Bath Like A Bootlegger In Moose Jaw

Article Category: Advice

Author Name: Web-Pro Consulting

A spa experience in Calgary is nice. You appear, they pamper you, you feel wonderful. However in Moosjaw it's a bit different.

Driving to Moose Jaw from the Regina flight terminal, it's easy to see why citizens joke that in Saskatchewan, you can view your dog escape for three days. I'm not much of a driver, and even I find myself thinking I might have rented an automobile and handled this long, arrow-straight road.

I'm happy I didn't, however, due to the fact that Dan Friesen is at the wheel. Friesen, a Saskatchewan local, is the owner of the Moose Jaw-based shuttle company. For $40 an individual, he'll transport travelers the 45-minute drive from the flight terminal, offering understandings along the means. (My favorite: a grand-looking house purchased from an Eaton's catalogue back then. If just.).

Friesen is doing good business, as Moose Jaw, the town of 37,000 understood for its murals (and for being home of the air-show-loving Snowbirds), has reinvented itself in recent times as a popular traveler location.

I've come right here with my beau, Sean, for the weekend to examine the big draws: the Temple Gardens Mineral spa, a hotel built to include the town's geothermal mineral springs, and the Tunnels Of Moose Jaw, a destination that brings the prairie town's vibrant and seamy history to life through subterranean trips.

When we reach the hotel, a big Santa Fe-style structure that occupies both sides of the street and includes a casino, we squander no time browsing through the main occasion, the 6,500-square-foot indoor-outdoor geothermal pool.

The water comes out of the ground at 45C, but is kept at a consistent temperature level of 37C indoors, and 38C outdoors (you can feel the difference), and the heat is a charming contrast to the cool evening air in very early June. Inside, flags standing for visitors' beginning nations hang over the pool.

Much of the tourism is neighborhood, from the Prairies (actually, who more than a farmer requires a spa weekend?), but guests have actually originated from locations as remote as Australia and Zambia to "take the waters," which are rich in epsom salts and other minerals, and just like those discovered in Bath, England.

The waters are credited with health advantages consisting of tension relief and detoxing. Tonight, about 20 individuals are drifting by, lazing poolside or parked in front of a jet, interacting with friends and family.

The truth this place exists is in itself remarkable (the City of Moose Jaw's motto is "surprisingly unexpected"). Once a boomtown, Moose Jaw's economy was seriously depressed by the early 1990s. That's when local Deb Thorn - who worked for the government attempting to assist unemployed people discover jobs - chosen to turn things around by taking benefit of the town's geothermal spring, found in 1910.

Thorn and 3 others each tossed a symbolic $25 in a hat, to kick off an investment push that ended with even more than 1,100 Moose Javians (I did not make that up) raising more than $3-million to help start Temple Gardens Mineral Spa, a luxury 69-room hotel so named for a casino that made use of to occupy the website. In 2006, the hotel was sold - with area members getting a substantial return on their financial investment. It has since broadened to include a gambling establishment and an added 110 guest spaces.

As Sean and I lounge in the pool, the babble alongside us has to do with Moose Jaw's Tunnels. Originally constructed in the late 1800s so steam engineers would not have to brave the elements to monitor the downtown buildings' heating systems, the underground network has actually been partly transformed to a destination that draws tourists and school kids alike.

I am particularly looking forward to the Chicago Connection trip, which discovers the town's historical, boozy link to the Prohibition-era U.S. There are two tours offered; the second is called Passage To Fortune and explores a darker duration in the area's history, when Chinese labourers lived and worked in the passages during a time of extreme racism. The tours include impressive sets, tour guide stars and animatronic characters. Both are remarkable, but it's fair to say the Prohibition Tour is the fun one.

And fun is exactly what we have in Moose Jaw - in between lightly chlorinated soaks, we lose cash in the nickel slots, play pool at a regional dive bar, have massages at Temple Gardens' Sun Tree Spa and eat yummy sandwiches at the gorgeous Yvette Moore Gallery.

When we arrive for our Chicago Connection Tunnel Tour, we are greeted by a lady in a flapper dress, boa and lipstick. In a loud and sassy voice, she introduces herself by her genuine name (Jessica) and her character's name (Fanny). Fanny is Al Capone's Moose Jaw woman, who makes things comfortable for him while he's in town.

The small tour team is notified that we are bootleggers, right here to purchase some inexpensive spirits in order to turn a quick revenue in the U.S. Fanny provides us the rundown on Moose Jaw circa 1920. The authorities chief is on the take, obviously. My pocketbook shows up at the top of my purse, and I am congratulated on bringing the hush money, makings me feel strangely proud.

We are shown a short film about Al Capone's group and led with a series of spaces dressed up in 1920s decor. In fact, there is no evidence that Al Capone himself explored, however Moose Jaw did make its label Little Chicago by brewing and carrying massive quantities of bootlegged whisky south of the border via the Soo Rail Line. (It's fitting that the old train station is now a liquor store.).

There you have it nothing like a Calgary day spa experience, however it sure noises like a lot of enjoyable!
