A Historic overview of the Square Grand Piano
Prior to the 20th century, it was neither the upright nor the regular grand piano that was the piano of choice in the homes of the upper class, but rather something called the square grand piano.
These pianos were constructed with the finest craftsmanship and materials, and often had cases made out of Brazilian Rosewood, Burled Walnut, and many other exquisite imported woods.
So why did the square grand piano disappear from production during the turn of the 20th century?
While factors like the two world wars and a shift in the social class system contributed majorly to the production of these unique pianos, it was also a rise in production costs that made it more difficult to continue their production.
With legs that are generally in the Rococo richly carved style, to ornate cases, these pianos simply became too expensive to produce from the turn of the 20th century onward.
What Makes the square grand piano superior to modern designs?
From a structural standpoint, the woods used in today's modern pianos are extracted from very young trees. Have you ever wondered why antique furniture and pianos have lasted the test of times? The woods used in Square Grand Pianos were already approx. 200-300 years old at the time of their construction.
This is important to be aware of because with age, a tree's density increases. That means that the wood used in these Square Grand Pianos was much more dense and therefore much more durable.
The engineering of a Square Grand Piano is in many regards superior to that of a modern grand piano. The pin block, which is where all the tuning pins are housed, is one of the most important components of any piano. In the modern grand piano it is poorly supported and is suspended in the front of the piano.
The Square Grand Piano, however, has a pin block which is fully supported in the back of the instrument. Now why would the piano evolve into something which is less structurally sound?
The answer is simply "convenience".
With tuning pins in the back of a Square Grand Piano, the piano tuner must reach back in order to tune the instrument. From a logical standpoint it is more important for a piano to have better structural integrity rather than merely making the life of a piano tuner a bit easier. However, the industry did not follow this logic...
Since a Square Grand Piano has a well-supported pinblock, there is much less of a chance for cracks to form, which is every modern piano owners worst nightmare...
If the pin block cracks, the piano will not hold tune.
In order to replace a cracked pinblock, one must remove all of the strings and cast iron plate (or harp) from the instrument, which is very costly.
Another benefit a Square Grand Piano has to offer is string length. Since the bass strings run the entire length of the Square Grand, which is generally around 7 feet in length (sometimes more), it provides the Square Grand Piano with a bass sound comparable to a semi concert grand piano.
Because these instruments are rectangular in nature, they also take much less room then a modern grand piano.
The Chickering & Sons – Manufacturer of the best Square Grand Piano
The Chickering & Sons manufactured some of the highest quality grand and Square Grand Pianos the world has ever seen. The company was first established in 1823 by Jonas Chickering in Boston.
Historical figures such as Franz List, President Abraham Lincoln, President Franklin Pierce, President James Buchanan, and President Theodore Roosevelt owned a Chickering and Sons Piano. While there were a few small companies producing a pianos in a America prior to the Chickering & Sons company, Chickering is considered to be America's actual first major piano manufacture.
What is referred to as the harp in a piano (the cast-iron frame which supports the tons of tension from the strings of a piano) was an innovation of Chickering & Sons. The sound of a Chickering & Sons Square Grand Piano can be best described as having a rich and dark toned bass sound with a middle and upper treble sound with a distinctively unique timbre.
