Having a pot holder around the kitchen can help do wonders for most of your cooking and food handling activities. In this article, you will learn more on how to create your own silicone pot holder trivet using scrap materials.
Materials
Before you start off with your pot holder creation, you need to prepare the materials that you will need for this task. You can readily find most of these materials in your household. These are some of the things that you will need:
- Bias tape
- Scraps of different materials (preferably fabric)
- Square quilt batting, around 64 square inches
- Selection
Initially, you need to choose the material scraps with the designs that you prefer to have on the outer part of the silicone pot holder trivet. Preferably, you should choose those with designs that can highly complement your current kitchen dcor. For each pot holder that you plan to create, you will need two squares. This does not necessarily mean that you have to get two matching squares for each pot holder. You may simply use a square with a complementary shade for the back part of the pot holder.
Cutting
For every silicone pot holder trivet that you will create, you have to cut the quilter's batting in a square such that it will measure eight inches for each side of the material. In case you have a low pile variety of quilter's batting, you may have to use two or more of these. These will ensure that the finished products can provide you with adequate protection against the heat.
Laying
After choosing the batting, you may then sandwich this in between the two cloth squares that you chose for the silicone pot holder trivet. The cloth should have the right portion of the material facing out. On the other hand, the back part should be against the batting. After getting the correct alignment for these materials, you may then pin these layers into place. The quilter's pins can nicely do the job for you.
Drawing Guide Lines
You may proceed to draw a line along the imaginary diagonal part of the square. You have to do the same for the other part of the square fabric. After this, you may then mark the lines that are readily parallel to this using intervals of at least two inches. You have to do this until you get to the edge of the fabric.
Stitching
After drawing the guide lines, you need to stitch directly over these. If you do this correctly, you will notice that the stitches will create a quilting on the middle of the partially finished pot holder. This should be diamond shaped.
Finishing Touches
To finish off the entire project, you have to find the bias tape around the edge of the cloth and create a loop. You may then stitch along the surface of the bias tape using a sewing machine. The stitches should preferably be on the edges of the holder. The loop will eventually serve as the hanging part if you want to store the pot holder.
