If you want to lose some weight then you may be thinking about very low calorie diets and whether they work or not. Even the experts are not in agreement on what diet works best for weight loss, and as you probably know there are loads of theories out there. People who wish to just lose a few pounds are not usually recommended to go on diets that restrict your calories greatly, it's usually extremely obese people who are recommended for these kinds of diets. The following information might be useful to you if you're thinking about going on a very low calorie diet.
One of the problems with very low calorie diets is that it's hard for people to stick with them long term. It is difficult for anyone to consume less than 800 calories a day, especially in the long term. While you may lose weight while you're on it, it's typical for people to start gaining weight when they go off the diet. That's why it's important to come up with a long term strategy for changing your lifestyle and eating a healthier diet. This is so you keep the weight off that you have lost rather than going back to your old habits after the very low calorie diet. Some research indicates that there are no proven benefits to a very low calorie diet as opposed to a merely low calorie diet. The
regular low calorie diet lets you consume anywhere between 800 and 1500 calories every day, while a very low calorie diet will keep you below 800 calories. Initial weight loss is usually greater if you're on a VLCD, but much of this is due to fluid loss. However, studies have suggested that after a few months a VLCD isn't any more effective than a regular low calorie diet. A VLCD, furthermore, often has unpleasant side effects, including fatigue, dry skin, hair loss and headaches, to name a few. So while a VLCD may be necessary for medical reasons in some cases, a traditional low calorie diet may be a more comfortable way for most people to lose weight.
Obese people find very low calorie diets to be appealing, but so do people suffering from eating disorders like anorexia nervosa, which is one danger of these diets. Being thin preoccupies people with this condition and they also have a view of themselves that's distorted. Those with these types of eating disorders will look at themselves and think they're fat, but to others they will look very emaciated. Many deficiencies in nutrition can occur in these people due to them just consuming very low calorie foods, and there are side effects to this, like hypothermia, depression and problems with their nails and hair. If you see somebody who's too thin on a very low calorie diet you should try and get them to find some help. Extremely overweight individuals who have medical issues due to them being overweight can benefit from very low calorie diets. However it isn't wise to go on this kind of diet without being supervised by a medical professional as there are various side effects and risks involved, like dehydration and malnutrition.
