Which Weight Loss and Detox Spa Treatments Work?
Spa treatments that promise weight loss or detoxification are offered in most spas. It seems each spa claims that a certain technique is the secret to shedding unwanted pounds or ridding clients' bodies of toxins. Body wraps, lymph drainage massages, juice cleanses, and health and fitness spas are all weight loss and detoxification treatment trends that are popular among spa goers. The claims that spas present sound good—taking inches off of your waist immediately and cleansing your body to feel healthy—but are they too good to be true? It's important that spa goers learn which treatments are truly effective so they avoid wasting time and hard-earned money. Here's a look at which popular weight loss and detoxifying treatments work and which may possibly stretch the truth.
Body Wraps to Cleanse and Lose Weight
Many spas claim that body wraps can help spa goers with a number of body-related issues. Some body wraps are designed to enhance clients' physical appearance, promising the reduction of cellulite and stretch marks, while tightening and toning loose skin. Spas may also guarantee weight loss with the use of certain body wrap techniques. Weight loss body wraps may appeal to clients who want to lose weight and appear more toned in a matter of hours. Other body wraps focus on purifying the body by claiming to detoxify organs and promote optimum health by drawing toxins out of the body. Weight loss and detoxification body wraps are priced from $100-$225 for 1-2 hour treatment sessions.
Spas that offer European body wraps typically guarantee that spa goers will lose inches off of their bodies and likely shed excess pounds. European body wrap treatments last for about two hours, and begin with the client stripping down to their underwear in a private spa room. The spa goer's full body measurements are taken, and the client is then covered in a special clay mixture that includes sea salt, kelp, and volcanic ash that reportedly draws toxins out of the skin. After the spa goer is covered in the clay mixture, the spa attendant tightly wraps the client from ankles to shoulders with cloth that is similar to an ACE bandage.
The spa goer then wears a large sweat suit and exercises for one hour under the instruction of the spa attendant.
The exercise generally involves using hand weights and performing calisthenics such as lunges and squats. Following an hour of exercise, the client takes off their sweat suit and the spa attendant removes the wrap. After washing the clay mixture off, the spa goer's body measurements are taken again to determine how many inches were lost throughout the treatment.
Spas that offer European body wraps assert that the treatment works by cleansing and compacting the skin's soft surface tissue to temporarily minimize the appearance of cellulite and tighten the skin.
Can you imagine sitting back and relaxing in a spa while burning over 900 calories in an hour? Spas that offer heat body wrap treatments that promise clients will lose inches, burn calories, and heal from conditions like acne, arthritis, and gastrointestinal-related problems.
Heat body wraps use infrared light, which the body perceives as heat. Infrared body treatments do not require clients be covered in mud or remove their clothing. The spa goer is simply wrapped in silicone bandages around their thighs, hips, abdomen, and arms. The bandages are connected to a machine that produces infrared heat. When applied to the body, infrared heat causes the heart rate to increase, thereby stimulating perspiration and increasing metabolism. When metabolism is increased, more calories are burned, which can contribute to weight loss. Spas that offer heat wraps also claim they reduce the appearance of cellulite. Cellulite is the rippling effect seen on the body when pockets of water, toxins, and fat exist underneath the skin's surface. Spas claim that heat from infrared wraps works to break up cellulite and release it into the blood stream in the form of calories to be used as energy.
According to a 2012 article on webmd.com, the claims that spas make about body wraps sound good, but are unsupported. Dermatologist Elizabeth Tanzi was quoted saying "there's never been any real scientific evidence that body wraps pull out toxins or purify your body in any way." Apparently, wraps that are touted as slimming may provide results that last temporarily. Dr. Sandra Fryhofer said that wraps "cannot take the place of a healthy diet and exercise." As for cellulite removal, doctors claim that wraps may reduce the appearance of cellulite, but do not permanently remove it. Overall, wraps are capable of moisturizing clients' skin, providing relaxation, and producing temporary weight loss, but shouldn't be depended on for long-term weight loss.
Juice Cleanses to Detoxify
Spas that offer juice cleanse treatments claim that the treatments boost the immune system, promote clear skin, increase energy, and detoxify the body. Juice cleanse treatments at spastypically last 3-5 days and provide clients with six juices per day, unlimited water, and complimentary spa treatments like full-body massages and exfoliating scrubs. The spas may also offer light exercise classes such as yoga or Pilates.
Proponents of juice cleanses say that pollutants in the air and chemicals in food and water cause the body to accumulate toxins. As a result, juice cleanses are recommended to let the digestion system rest, and allow the body to rid itself of toxins while facilitating healing. By creating juices out of only organic fruits and vegetables, spas claim that clients' bodies are rid of impurities while being supplied with vitamins, minerals, and enzymes that are easily digestible.
Do juice cleanses work to detoxify the body? They sure sound convincing—a quick diet that can help spa goers cleanse their body of chemicals and feel great—but it turns out that our bodies have their own detoxification system. The liver, kidneys, and intestines filter toxins that enter the body, and expel them through urine, bowel movements, and sweat. Juice cleanses may leave out critical nutrients, like fat and protein, that the body needs to function properly.
In a March 2012 article on huffingtonpost.com, Dr. James Dillard, professor at Columbia University, said that "there's nothing wrong with going on a juice fast for a few days." A short juice cleanse treatment may be beneficial for spa goers' health and relaxation; however, some doctors feel cleanses aren't effective in detoxifying the body, according to the Huffington Post. Juice cleanse treatments range from $150-250 for the juice alone, depending on the length of the treatment.
