Animal cruelty is a broad social issue today, and many people feel strongly against the maltreatment of these cute, fluffy creatures. A few years back, public uproar was created after it was revealed that many cosmetic companies have been using animals to test their products.
Today, some people might insist on using products that were made at the expense of some poor animals. For most, however, a change is definitely needed.
This animal cruelty debate has spilled over on the makeup brushes market, mainly on the issue of using natural or synthetic hair brushes.
Apparently, however, there is not enough outrage, since natural hair brushes still occupy a sizeable market niche today. Only few brush types, like the kabuki brush, are now being made with synthetic hair.
"Cruelty-free?" Don't be so sure.
If you're one of those people who insist on using natural hair brushes because they have better effects, here's a little story on how those brushes are made. Maybe after reading this, you'd decide to change to buy some synthetic kabuki brush instead of that natural-hair brush set you want.
Certainly, some companies that produce natural-hair brushes comply with strict cruelty-free policies. This means they use only products like wool, without hurting or killing animals in the process.
However, many companies have vague if not nonexistent policies regarding this concern. What does this imply? It's either they pretend to be cruelty-free without backing it up with solid proof, or they stop pretending and admit outright that they get materials from the fur industry (killing thousands of animals in the process).
Killed in the name of Beauty
Now that you know the basics on animal cruelty policies of cosmetic companies, you are probably beginning to feel uneasy about using that natural-hair brush to make your face look pretty. And you'd be right on that score.
The trouble with the animal cruelty debate is that it has been too focused on animal testing when, in fact, thousands of animals are being slaughtered simply for their valuable fur.
You think they only rip the hair off the goat and let it live? Unfortunately, this is not the case. And, only think, natural hair brushes use not only goat hair, but also a variety of other animals' fur, including cute, soon-to-be-endangered squirrels.
Make the change today
If you've been using natural hair brushes out of sheer ignorance about how they are made, it's never too late to make a change. Stop using those products and choose synthetic-fiber brushes instead.
Once people stop buying these products, these companies would get the message and stop producing them. Besides, you can get the same results from synthetic products, and reduce the risks of allergic reactions, too.
Don't buy into the natural hair hype. Most of the promised benefits of these products are largely unfounded. In fact, most experts agree that synthetic hair brushes are better for certain types of makeup.
So, the next time you shop for a brush, skip out on those expensive natural-hair brushes. Check out synthetic, high-quality brushes instead, like the versatile kabuki brush.
