Writing a mission statement that is clear and easily understood can determine whether companies, families and individuals will be successful in their endeavours. Keep reading to learn how you can best write your mission statement.
A properly written mission statement can be a guiding light for quick decision making and can allow for a complete level of certainty that the decision was correct.
I personally find writing a mission statement to be a wonderful idea. I've always had my values but never really wrote them out on paper. After reading Stephen Covey's book, the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, I've become much more aware of how writing a mission statement adds clarity.
Writing A Mission Statement – How specific should it be?
The really interesting part of a good mission statement is that it never needs to change.
That's right, you write one and you could keep it forever.... this is not to say that you wouldn't updated as you thought improvements could be made.
I'll give you an example.
IBM has a very simple statement about their company. "IBM stands for three things: Dignity of the individual, excellence and service."
In the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People Covey gives and examples of a time when an IBM employee got sick while at a conference in New York. Despite the fact that IBM arranged for excellent medical treatment in New York, the employees wife appeared to be concerned. She wanted her husband to have treatment back home in California with their family doctor.
IBM representatives could tell she was concerned and took the initiative to arrange a private aircraft to take the sick employee back to California. When they realized that the drive to the airport might be troublesome, they arranged for a helicopter to take him to the airport instead.
Did IBM need to do this? Likely not.
These travel arrangements must have cost a fortune. So why did IBM do it?
As you can see above, IBM stands for dignity of the individual.
It was likely a very quick decision for them because when it came time to make a decision. Writing a mission statement gave them criteria to make the decision.
Imagine the power that writing a mission statement could give us as individuals?
but I've digressed...
In terms of specificity, can you see how IBM's mission could really remain the same for centuries, if not a millennium? Technology and products might change but their values can stay the same.
So if you're writing your personal missions statement, try to avoid using specifics about your job and daily life because things might change.
e.g. rather than say "to be the best construction manager company X has ever seen", you could say "I always deliver beyond expectations on my commitments and add constant and improving value to the lives of those around me."
That's just an idea, I'm thinking about using some of that in my mission statement.
Writing A Mission Statement – Who Should Use Them?
Mission Statements can be effective for individuals, companies, groups within companies and families as well as others.
A few things to remember:
When using mission statements in groups within organizations, ensure that your mission statement is fully in harmony with the primary organization's mission statement.
Involve all members who will be effected when writing a mission statement to ensure you have a true reflection of what's important to all members. It will be much easier to get buy-in this way.
Writing a Mission Statement – Final Thoughts
Mission statements can bring families, organizations and groups together. I personally most appreciate the value at a personal level. I find it helps to not only write out my goals but also my values by writing a mission statement.
