Fitness for Moms-- Yes, it is Possible!
I get up at 5am three mornings a week to lift (I still like Power90 3,4 Sculpt). Yeah, I'm a mom. And just like motherhood brings its own special rewards, challenges, and quite a few funny moments, so to being a mom has its own set of rewards and challenges (and yes, some funny moments) when it comes to your fitness program.
Fitness for Moms Concerns
It can be hard just to find time for every day chores, let alone a 40 min. Instead of saying, "I don't have time for that" say, "it's not a priority for me". If you are ready to make your own health and fitness a priority, consider these moms' fitness scheduling options:.
1. Before the kids are awake-- works well if you're a "morning person" and your kids usually sleep to a fairly predictable time.
2. After the kids are asleep-- works well if your kids don't go to bed too late, or if you have a baby who wakes very early or at totally different times on different days.
3. During the baby's nap-- works well if your baby takes a regularly scheduled nap, and naps for a decent amount of time. May require setting up some entertainment for older children while you workout.
4. While someone else watches the kids-- works well if you have a spouse who is available to help, or a friend willing to "swap" childcare (watch each other's kids while the other does her workout).
5. With a young child in the room in a playpen or other safe area-- works well if your little one self entertains well, or is happy as long as Mommy is in sight. If you need to pick up a sippy cup, keep in mind you do have a pause button.
Stay committed to your personal fitness. Make the workout your "baby"-- we all somehow find time to sit and nurse or feed a baby.
Choosing the Right Fitness Program.
Choosing the right fitness program can make all the difference. Slim in 6, TurboJam, Hip Hop Abs, Power90 and Rockin' Body are all great introductory programs with workouts that run in under 50 min (under 40 min for most!). If you've got some basic level of fitness you could also try 10 Minute Trainer.
Optimizing Fitness for Mom.
Now that you've got an idea on your workout time and program, it's time to think about what other factors might be a concern when optimizing fitness for mom. Sometimes, you've just got to estimate. Another mommy nutrition downfall-- eating the kids' food!
If you are nursing, you need about 300 additional calories a day. Make these high-quality, nutrition dense calories to fuel your milk production.
If you've had a kid or two you may have notice some separating of the abdominal muscles. The best way to help heal the split is to strengthen the other abdominal muscles (including the include the obliques and transverse abdominis).
Mommy Rewards.
Don't worry-- Fitness for Moms isn't all challenges. And sometimes that unexpected "child entrance" into your workout room is just what you need. I know a lot of Moms whose kids "do the workout" with them.
What other benefits does being a mom bring to the table? If you're a mom, you've got a lot of the things you need to succeed in your workout: persistence, dedication, a willingness to work hard, and the patience and determination to stick with something important (hey, you made it through 9 months of pregnancy, right ?!).
Mommy Humor.
Maybe our best asset is our ability to look back and laugh, whether it's at something embarrassing our child said in public, or how uncoordinated we felt in our first Power Yoga section of Power90. Attitude really makes a difference. When things get tough, find something to laugh at. Have an "I can do this attitude". The hardest part of my workout used to be the shower-- somehow my getting in the shower caused the baby to wake up. Then, one night I got my workout done early, and the 3 year old heard me get into the shower. Apparently, this was extremely upsetting and he was totally distraught until I went in to him. For the next few weeks, when I put him to bed, he would look at me very seriously after I said "goodnight" and say, "and never, ever, take a shower!" With five kids, there's always something to laugh at, from the almost 2 year old trying to do pushups, to the 3 year old doing bridge and downward dog. But, all cuteness aside, it's rewarding to watch them modeling what is around them, noticing that they see fitness for mom as a normal part of daily life.
