I've heard the old saying, fake it till you make it, many times in my life but felt a pressure to embrace the idea when I began working in mortgage financing as a commissioned salesperson. With absolutely no experience in the role and no experience at selling, it was a bit of an uphill battle.
In spite of the challenges I've faced I'm going to tell you why the saying "fake it till you make it" is just plain silliness.
Now I'm not saying that you shouldn't stretch your limits, because you absolutely should. What I would suggest, however, is that you have a clear and specific set of guiding principles in your life that can simply be applied to different situations you find yourself in.
Stephen Covey calls this a person's "Mission Statement". In other words, a set of criteria that a person should use when evaluating situations to determine a course of action. This would apply to a person's entire life. Covey argues that once a person can become centered on their principals they will be happier and more effective as people. They will also feel a stronger sense of identity.
So why not fake it till you make it?
The problem with fake it till you make it is that it doesn't allow for honesty. Honesty with one's self and honesty with others.
Human beings are so fascinating.
We're all equipped with a wonderful ability to sense when something is not true.
Long story short, when you fake it till you make it, people can read you like a book... and can tell you're trying to sell yourself as something you're not.
It's okay to go out and act confident, but OWN your TRUE story and be proud of it.
Find a way to sell yourself in a way that you can believe in.
When I got started in arranging mortgage financing I really worked hard to focus on how my past experiences had helped be. I graduated from business school in 2008 and spent 2008-2010 teaching first year business at the university I graduated from.
During the time I learned a lot of key business skills. The challenge was that a lot of those skills didn't really apply.. I had to learn more.
I personally feel my attention would have been better focused building a relationship with people and just opening up and being real with them.
So what's the alternative to fake it till you make it when getting started?
Sometimes you've just got to work harder until you find your momentum.
Saying something like "I'm just getting started but I'm working with a great and knowledgeable team and am determined to be successful" is a heck of a lot better than lying about how long you've been doing something or acting like you know the answer to a question you don't.
I know it's hard to do at times but be comfortable with the words "I don't know".
People will respect you for it.
Just be sure to follow those words with something like... "but I could find out for you" or "if I could get you the answer to that question would you be ready to move forward"
Fake it till you make it is a lie.
Always uphold integrity
Alan K. Simpson once said, "If you have integrity, nothing else matters. If you don't have integrity, nothing else matters."
Your reputation will follow you. Protect it and be sincere with people.
Adopt honesty and sincerity as two of your principles and you'll find your success.
