Did you know that the first step to achieving a goal is writing it down? That's right, you can give a goal power simply by putting it into words, even if you did nothing else... but why stop there?
Please continue reading for a quick guide to writing effective LONG Term goals which can be broken down into smaller goals to help measure your progress. A post on short term goal setting will follow under the "Success Principles" Category of my blog which you can visit at www.empowernetwork.com/andrewhines.
Goal Planning – Write your goal down as if you already achieved them
While there are many different elements to goal planning, I'm going to show you a quick and easy way to write down your major goals for the year.
Write down your goal in present tense as if you've already achieved it. Be sure to pick something that seems somewhat reasonable.
Quick Tip: When goal planning, to make a goal seem more reasonable, find people who have done what you want to do and then find out how they did it. Once armed with this information, goals that previously seemed impossible will seem possible. This is key because if you don't believe your own goal, it's a lot tougher to achieve it!
The key is then to write a story that takes place on the last day on the current year with you telling the story of how you achieved your goal. e.g. if this letter was written for this year it would be dated December 31st, 2013 and addressed to yourself. Your letter could sound something like this:
Dear Jimmy,
I'm so deeply glad that I was able to accomplish my goal of XXXX this year by following the xxxx steps. I remember hanging up my iPhone and feeling ...... when I made that XXx sale. I was standing in the front hallway of xxxxx and had an overwhelming sensation that I had made it and could do anything.
In this stage of goal planning it is important to include as many senses in your description as possible. Include feelings, sensation and a very detailed description of what you did to achieve it. It's okay if you don't have the exact details but you should at very least have the basics of how you'll do it. Speaking with someone who's already done what you want to do should also help with this.
Don't be afraid to stretch yourself with your goal. The point of goal setting is to improve. Set a goal that you are excited about!
It's okay to have a handful of these major goals written out for the year. If your reading this half way through the year, still write these goals for December 31st. If you're almost at the end of year, you could just write the goal for the December 31st of the following year.
Goal Planning – Some Final Thoughts
Goal planning or Goal Setting should be fun. Remember, if you want something in life you need to be clear on it. Stack the odds in your favor by actually writing down what it is that you want.
Goal Planning is a lifetime process. You'll need to get to the core of what drives you to ensure success.
The next step is to get to the root of why your goal is important to you. Please stay tuned for my upcoming post on "Goal Chucking" and how it can help you improve your odds of success!
