Pouring a concrete slab is easy stuff, that is, if you have been doing it for quite some time now. But if it's just you're first time then you might get intimidated. Read on. This article should help you get comfortable with it. The key is simply doing it using an organized step by step process, just like the experts do all the time.
A concrete slab is the foundation of every architectural design. It makes up the support for everyday patios, sheds, kitchen countertops, and even farming houses. Concrete slab construction can also be done with ease. With planning and the right techniques, you can start the construction right at your backyard. But since getting smooth and level surfaces is among the priorities of the process, this article will focus on smart techniques when pouring concrete slabs.
With your design ready and the materials neatly arranged for convenience, factor in the following:
The concrete type you want to use here,
The concentration level of the ingredients you will be using when raising up the concrete flooring,
- Forms construction,
- The actual pouring techniques, reinforcing concrete for solidification purposes,
- Various ways in implementing the finishing process, and
- Allowing concrete curing.
The materials you are going to need here are the following: cement, gravel, sand, hammer, shovel, wire mesh, wood spikes, level, trowel, pilers, and the mason's string. The designs, layout and slab size should guide you in the process.
Pull out the grass, any debris or weed on the chosen ground before setting slab footings on the sides (an 18-inch depth and width for the footing would be ideal to create adequate space), as slabs are made from a single pour. Then position the form boards all over the perimeter. Hammer them down in place using double-headed nails.
Before you start pouring your cement mixture, place sand (a 2-inch bed would do) all over the wooden frame and rake it until it becomes smooth using water. Situate rebar rods over the stools before meshing the sand bed to cover the open slab area.
Use a concrete mixture or a mortar and pastel when preparing the mixture. Make sure it'll make a strong foundation after solidification.
You need to perform one shot pouring to achieve a uniform layout since you're making monolithic slabs. Pour the mixture from one end running all the way to the other corner. Make sure you covered the entire slab area well in the process.
Smooth its surface using a screed board. A good slab must be something without any visible air bubbles within the mixture. Let it dry up for a couple of days. Once completely solidified, wet the slab using water on a regular basis so you'll end up with a strong slab.
Always remember that when pouring a concrete slab, pour your mixture immediately. This should prevent it from drying prematurely. Understand that cement needs time to fully dry; you are better off working on bright and sunny weather. Better yet, you need to practice consistency in your mixture for good results.
