A makeup blending brush usually has a small, rounded, and stiff surface with a relatively flat dimension matched with a long handle. Its main purpose is not really to hold on to a lot of makeup powder, but rather to spread existing colors onto a wider surface. This cosmetic application is called "blending."
Many people often do not take good care of their blending brushes, preferring to focus their attention on the more expensive tools in their makeup kit. But the truth is: it is hard to find good blending brushes. So in case you do find some, here are a couple of tips on how to make these last longer.
1. Use these only for powder blending. Never use this product for applying cream or liquid-based cosmetics. Aside from the fact that it is very difficult to remove said applications from the bristles, most of the residues tend to accumulate on the root of the bristles which can lead to unsightly and permanent clumping of the hairs.
Unfortunately, this also encourages bacterial and fungal growth within the trapped cream or liquid, which can lead to skin irritation. To avoid this scenario altogether, it is best to use this tool only for powder based cosmetics.
2. Blend gently. The key to getting that nice, smooth look is to blend colors with the lightest possible touch. Use the tips of the brush to move the colors along. Do not press too hard on the surface of the skin. Otherwise, you might actually remove most of the makeup you just applied on, and you will destroy the stiff constitution of the makeup blending brush.
3. "Blend" off powders you have previously used.
In case you change your mind about the makeup colors you are using, you can simply "blend" off the powders that are already on your makeup brush. You can do this by laying out one layer of tissue paper (or bathroom roll or paper towel) and gently moving it across the surface. You will gradually see the colors becoming lighter.
Forcibly pinching or scraping off the makeup powder from this type of brush will only ruin the bristles faster.
4. Wash your makeup blending brush regularly.
At the very least, you should wash this kind of brush 3 times a week, especially if you use this daily. If you use it occasionally, once a should should be fine.
One of the best advantages of washing your makeup blending brush regularly is that it keeps the hairs stiff enough to do its primary job but soft enough that it does not ruin the blending process.
To clean this makeup tool, simply place a drop of shampoo (any shampoo you personally use) in ΒΌ warm cup of water. Swirl the brush in until the hairs are completely saturated. Make sure though that you keep the ferrule (that narrow band of metal or plastic that separates the bristles from the handle) as dry as possible.
Rinse the brush in cool, running water until all the shampoo residues are gone. Air dry complete on a paper towel.
