If you are a makeup enthusiasts, you probably have a nice Kabuki brush in your makeup kit. A quality makeup tool like this is not only very easy to use, but can last a long time as well... if you know how to use it properly, that is.
Saying thus, here are a few essential tips on how you can extend the life of your Kabuki brush.
1. Use it only for powder applications.
One of the biggest mistakes that people do when using this particular brush is letting it have constant contact with cream-based makeup This practice leads to the unsightly clumping of the fine hairs, which can trap in unwanted dirt. This in turn, can increase your chances of acquiring any number of skin blemishes.
The best way of avoiding this is to apply the brush on bare skin, or use it to touch up an already powdered surface, or if you are using cream-based foundation and concealers, apply a light layer of powder on first using a sponge before using the Kabuki brush.
2. Use only the tips when applying powder on.
Kabuki brushes are usually luxuriously plush with a wide surface. This means that you can get a lot of makeup powder on the brush tips with one stroke. You can use this inherent property by applying colors on using only the tips of the brush.
There is really no need to press the fine hairs hard against your skin --- so much so that the brushing surface opens wider. This will not add more color to the intended surface because the makeup powder tends remain at the tips of the brush.
Some people also mistakenly believe that they can blend the colors by pressing the brush hard against the skin. Nothing could be further from the truth. At the very least, this would only diminish the visibility of the applied makeup. The worst possible scenario here is that you actually destroy the integrity of the brush.
It would be best to blend the powders before you apply it on the skin. However, if you are going for the dramatic look, you can always use a specially made blending brush to do the job.
3. Regularly clean your Kabuki brush.
Regularly washing and drying this kind of brush will help cut down the risk of bacterial growth. It also helps prevent clumping of the fine hairs and remove stains from dark colored makeup.
If you apply makeup on daily, washing your Kabuki brush twice a month is advisable. However, if you use this makeup implement only occasionally, then washing it once a month should work fine.
In order to do so, you can soak the hairs of your Kabuki brush in a solution of ½ part shampoo (of your choice) and ½ part room temperature water. Swirl the brush in the solution gently and try not to get the handle or the very roots of the brush very wet. After a few minutes, rinse under running water and gently massage the brush tips to see if you have removed all shampoo residue.
Gently squeeze out the excess liquid, shake it out, and let it dry completely on a paper towel. Do not turn your brush on its handle end because the water will accumulate on the roots of the brush which may destroy its binding glue.
