In any case, pouring a concrete slab should be simple enough to comprehend and apply. The problem is many things can go wrong for different reasons. Such mistakes are easily avoided, once great care is introduced into the equation. Here are some common, easy-to-tell mistakes that you can readily avoid when pouring concrete slabs.
The Improper Mix Mistake
This by far is among the biggest mistakes you can do when pouring a concrete slab. Getting the mixture wrong can also compromise your concrete efforts. If you happen to put in too much concrete or water, do not expect a proper cure. To avoid this, you have to follow the mix guide to the letter. Certain humidity levels and elevations also affect the curing process, so watch out for it. Be mindful of your mixture as well.
Inefficient Reinforcement Mistake
Understand that concrete is primarily a strong material, and will hold fairly on its own. What it lacks however, is tensile strength. To keep your concrete slab intact in the long term, you have to strengthen it by adding reinforcement during the mix. You can use plastic, glass, and even metal fibers in this case; put them into the concrete mix just before pouring into the slabs. Once the concrete dries up, the fibers inside will create a strong bond together, thus strengthening the whole concrete slab. You can even consider steel synthetic mesh or rebar in place where you plan to pour the concrete slab.
The Improper Steel Mesh Placement Mistake
The problem with using steel mesh to reinforce your concrete slabs in place is the plain difficulty in positioning the slabs. For the mesh to be fully effective, you have to take care to position it in the middle of the slab. You can accomplish this by pouring just half of the concrete mix content first. Afterwards, insert the mesh in the middle before pouring in the rest of the concrete.
The Mistake of Not Having Enough Time
When pouring concrete slabs (and anything you plan to do with the concrete) make sure that your concrete mix has sufficient time to undergo the curing process. This is vital if you want to have a good surface finish, or if you want to place some furniture on it. The same goes if you are planning to paint the slab once finished. Give it twenty-four to forty-eight hours, though you must remember it needs a full week for a complete cure, depending of course on humidity and temperature. Track the curing process at all times so you will not make that "lack-of-time" mistake.
The Form-Is-Not-Set Mistake
As you go about pouring a concrete slab, you will need a form, which are simply pieces of wood nailed in a certain way to conform to your planned shape. This should prevent the concrete mix from spilling out unnecessarily, thus creating an unwanted mess. It's easy to build the form; simply placing it within the planned excavated area is never enough though. What you need instead is a shallow trench where you insert the form and introduce dirt to fully secure it. If you do this, you wouldn't have to worry about getting leaks anymore.
