I want to believe that I am a nice person, always respectful, polite, honest and dependable but the more I become self aware the more I realise that this is not always true. How much do we really want to know ourselves? What are we afraid of? A definition of self aware is to be aware of yourself, including your traits, feelings and behaviours. Have you ever said something or done something and afterwards thought I dont know why I said or did that? It may have felt out of character.
Do you understand why you feel the way you do sometimes and behave the way you do? Whilst working as a youth worker many years ago I was intrigued by what influenced people and I would borrow psychology books from the library to study in my own time. I seriously considered doing a course in psychology but chose to do the Diploma in Social Work, which had a psychology component. The course taught me many things but I think the most important thing I learnt was to question myself. To become self aware is to enter into a whole new world where your values and beliefs are brought out into the open to be examined.
When I told people that I would be studying for the Diploma in Social work I was warned that relationship break ups were common amongst social work students. One of the consequences of my developing self awareness was that realised that there were things that I wanted to change and that I had the power to do that. In my last year of the course I split from my partner of 7 years. Now I am not blaming the course, nor do I think it was the power of suggestion but I do know becoming self aware empowered me. So here is a warning when you become self aware expect things to happen.
I believe that when you become self aware you open up many possibilities. When you become more aware, that is, develop an understanding of why you feel the way you feel and behave the way you do, you open up an opportunity to make changes. In your personal life of course it could mean making decisions about a relationship like I did but of course it could also result in bringing a relationship closer together. In your work life if you were to become self aware, your growing self awareness could lead to you making new decisions about the way you feel about your job. It could give you the confidence to go for a promotion or make the decision that you want a new challenge in a completely different job.
In the workplace self awareness is closely related to your professional development.
Knowing yourself means you are better able to recognise your skills, strengths and weaknesses. Knowing what affect you have on people and having a willingness to be adaptable in how you respond to others will have a positive effect on your work relationships. Also your willingness to reflect on your performance and openness to actively seeking opportunities for self-improvement will do much for your career progression.
To a certain extent to become self aware you must be willing to be totally honest with yourself. Honesty with yourself is not just about what you think about yourself but it is about allowing others to give you feedback on what they think about you too. The real test is to allow people to be honest with you because they are in the best position to see your blind spot. Of course you may want to select people who will give feedback in a respectful, honest and sensitive way.
Here are some questions to help you become self aware and know yourself better
 What are 3 strengths?
 What are 3 weaknesses?
What aspect of your job do you most enjoy?
What aspect of your job do you least enjoy?
In what situation do you feel most comfortable?

Gives you the ability to change things about yourself that you would like to change
Be in a position to anticipate because you are in control

I expect that your list could look very different to mine. What difference would it make to either your personal or professional life if you were able to open up yourself to being self aware? Remember when you become self aware you open up lots of possibilities.
