According to American Psychological Association, "Bullying is a form of aggressive behavior in which someone intentionally and repeatedly causes another person injury or discomfort. Bullying can take the form of physical contact, words or more subtle actions."
My daughter made a video on my ipad, which I see fitting for this topic (view video in my blog post). At first we investigated heavily to make sure she was just making a video and was not being bullied, especially since we just moved to a new place. All was well, but none the less it is a great lesson and a direct reflection of what you teach your kids matters!
As parents of a 6 and 8 year old we make it priority to ask our children what is going on in school, did anyone both kids and adults say or do anything that was not nice or made them uncomfortable? Both our children have expressed that there are kids in their classes that are considered to be "bullies" by their peers. We are quick to contact the teacher and/or parents with any concerns we have..which now a days I recommend every parent do.
Most times the person that is being bullied does not fight back either because they can't or because they are afraid for the punishment to continue. Bullies do not need a reason to bully someone they just want someone who seems weaker and obviously nicer than they are.
As parents we need to realize that there are many forms of bullying so we can help our children combat this big issue. Our children are facing bullying at school and sometimes they are bullied online, cyber bullying.
How can we help and stop bullying and help those that are so precious to us. Once you find out that your child is being bullied by class or school mates contact the school and work with them to resolve the problem. Your child will need to know that they have the support of their family and school in combating bullying.
Most times when a child is being cyber bullied it is usually done by class and school mates. Again the attention should be brought to the school and the bully's parent's attention. Both set of parents' involvement is necessary in order to nip the problem. The school also need to put in place a policy that insist that teachers get involve when they see or hear of bullying taking place. Schools also need to have classes and workshops that teach their students tolerance of others regardless of race, sexuality, size and culture.
Bullying has a life time of emotional effects on those who have been bullied. There are too many cases of children who are victims of bullying committing suicides. It is a never ending tragedy and we need to see the signs that something is going on with our children. Pay keen attention to your children have you noticed that your happy jovial child has become sad and withdrawn. Something is going on ask him or her questions. Have you noticed that your child seems to be having a lot of anger flare ups or being over emotional? It is definitely time to start asking questions about what is going on. They are probably being emotionally bullied. Are their grades slipping dramatically without explanation and they are scared of going to school or have shown lost interest in school. It is time to talk to your child. Some of the bullying can be seen physically. Does child always have bruises or complaining of constant aches and pains but cannot explain what happen? It is time to intervene. Get involve before your child becomes a statistic.
After you have realized that your child has been the victim of bullying getting the bullying to stop is only solving half of the problem. I know we think that love conquers all but you also need to get your child professional help. It is time to find a professional counselor or psychologist to help your child get through the emotions and hurt of being bullied. Remember while they are going through this confusing time they are going to need your support. They will need to know that you are always going to be there for them. Protecting our children is our primary job.
