In the year 985 thirty ships sailed from the port of Breidafjordur in Iceland. Aboard were the sailors and their families plus sheep, cows, goats, horses and other farm-animals. All kinds of tools for work were also on board for this long and difficult journey to Greenland, agricultural and for masonry and hunting. Timber for housing must have been there. Leader of the group was Eric the Red Thorvaldsson from Haukadal. His wife was Thjodhildur Jorundardottir. Most of the travellers came from the western part of Iceland, but also from other parts.
Despite many hardships and difficulties, including fog and storms that sank some of the ships, most of these first nordic settlers arrived to their destination in Greenland and started building their new life with icelandic strength and determination
This first settlement included the area from the southernmost point of Greenland, Hvarf, north to Isafjord (Sermilik). This area is now called Qaqortoq, but had the name Eystri-Byggd in the middle ages. The settlement progressed by the settlers- chiefs each had their own fjord, where they raised their farm and were surrounded by family.
How the main chiefs were chosen is not known, but very likely the owners of the ships held the right to the best lands, innermost in the fjords. It is estimated that these first settlers numbered about 500. A great number of new arrivals came in the following years. For five hundred years the population might have been between 1400- 3000.
The icelandic/ nordic population soon became aware that they were not alone in their new- found country. They found things and tools that clearly belonged to inuit people that formerly lived there. These people are now thought to have been Dorset-inuits, that lived by Disco Bay before the arrival of the Icelanders. The Dorset-nation disappears in the middle ages, but Thule- inuits that now inhabit Greenland started to move southward from the northern regions. They seem to have come to Vestribyggd and Eystribyggd after the disappearance of the nordic settlements in Greenland.
There are now no remnants of the Dorset-inuits in Eystribyggd. The reason can be higher sea-levels (sea levels are now 5 meters higher than they were in the middle ages). All their things might thus be consumed or buried by the sea, or that they were all small items that the inuits took with them in their excursions.
Much research is constantly being done about Greenland and the mysterious disappearance of nordic (iclandic) people there
