The Special Boat Service (SBS) may be less well known to the public than their Army Special Forces counterpart (The SAS) but they are as highly trained, heavily armed and just a deadly.
The SBS are Great Britain's Naval Special Forces unit. Divided into four specialist squadrons they have approximately 120-200 operatives compared to the SAS's 240 (60 per squadron). Here I will look at their choice of weapons and the specialist guns they employ to get the job done.
The SBS use many weapons used by the standard armed forces of the UK but like the SAS they have a wider choice of arsenal to suit their specific missions. Their primary weapon being the C8 SFW (Special Forces Weapon) carbine assault rifle.
This has been in use since the late 1990's replacing the M16 assault rifle. It is however pretty much a copy of the US M4, a shorter compacted M16. It does lose some range to the compact design. It is designed for Close Quarters Battle (CQB). The gun takes 5.56mm standard NATO ammunition, firing at a rate of between 750 and 950 rounds per minute.
Take a look at our airsoft bb guns similar to or based on the M16, M4 and C8 assault rifles at www.airsoftstoreuk.com
The SBS standard sidearm is the Sig Sauer P226 Pistol. This is now used over the browning high power pistol. AirsoftStoreUK sell airsoft bb gun versions of both the Sig P226 & Browning Pistol. Made in Switzerland by Sig Arms it is a very popular pistol among armed forces and law enforcement agencies the world over. The 9mm version being the most favoured by SBS operatives. As in the Regiment (SAS) the extended 20 rounds magazine is often used by SBS members rather than the standard 15 round clip.
Airsoft BB Gun Walther PPK
The Sig Sauer P230 is a smaller pistol which is desirable when on covert operations as it can be concealed easily under civilian clothing. However it only carries a 7 round clip. Similar to James Bond's Walther PPK it is a reliable secondary weapon of the SBS.
The SBS undertake highly specialised missions which often call for highly specialised weapons. For example the Hechler & Koch P11 is an underwater pistol. This pistol is actually a dart gun holding 5 7.72mm darts. This gun is used by SBS frogmen & us useful when moving ashore to silently take down enemy sentries.
Sadly we do not have an airsoft bb gun version of this pistol for sale.
Other specialised guns include the Silent Sten Gun. Stealth is often crucial to SBS missions and in World War II the need for such a gun was realised.
The result was the reliable Sten. Used as late as the Falklands conflict this weapon has since been replaced by the H&K MP5SD.
The H&K MP5 is a compact 9mm sub machine gun with suppressor. Useful in hostage rescue missions as the rounds are less likely to pass through targets and walls and hit a hostage. Used with sub sonic ammo the suppressed version is silent. An extremely useful and relaible piece of equipment. We sell a superb airsoft bb gun replica.
