The Dragunov Sniper Rifle SVD is a semi automatic Russian marksman rifle developed during the Soviet period. The Soviets considered that long range battle engagements were lost to standard troops due to the use of assault rifles and automatic machine guns optimised for close to medium range heavy rapid fire. It was designed to increase its infantry squad's effective range of fire to at least 600m. The rifle is extremely durable even in extreme weather conditions, it is reliable, reasonably accurate for a rifle of this calibre and also lightweight.
The sniper rifle was designed by Yevgeny Dragunov in 1958. In the early 1960's the Soviet Military held a contest of three rifles. Dragunov's design won and was put into production in 1963.
The sniper rifle was designed for marksmen and not specifically for specialised highly trained sniper teams. Every basic infantry unit had at least one rifle marksman with a Dragunov sniper rifle. Whilst most other armies did not have a single sniper a part from special forces units.
Used just behind the front line of battle to take out high value targets such as commanding officers and radio operators, the snipers could be very effective, providing valuable support for infantry soldiers. Relatively small numbers of marksmen could cause significant disruption on the battlefield.
This sniper rifle is gas operated with a hammer type striking mechanism and a rotating bolt. The magazine capacity is 10 rounds. It has a total length of just over 48 inches, weighs in at 4.3kg and has muzzle velocity of 830m/s or 2,723 ft/s.
The sniperrifle uses rifle cartridges with ordinary, tracer and armour-piercing-incendiary bullets or rifle sniper cartridges. The fire is delivered in single shots.
With its standard iron sight it has a maximum range of 1200m. With the Dragunov's PSO-1 quick detach sniper scope it has a maximum range of 1300m however its effective range is 800m. The rifle can be fitted with an AK47 spear bayonet if required and comes with a detachable cheek rest.
The distinct and attractive stock of this sniper rifle is a wooden skeletonised frame with thumbhole. Although today most will have a polymer stock instead of the original wood, cutting down the weigh of the rifle. A folding stock version was created in the early 1990s. This version was more compact and was called the SVDS, designed for us by the Airborne Infantry.
This effective sniper rifle has been in use for over 50 years and is still used around the world today. Since the 60's the rifle has featured in many wars including Vietnam, Cambodia, Afghanistan (Soviet war) and the present Afghan War, Gulf War, Somalia Civil War, Iraq War, Chechen Wars and the Libyan Civil War.
