Undertaking security night surveillance can be challenging, which is why you need to use the right surveillance camera technology. Night surveillance is most often conducted with infrared cameras that capture images using infrared light that is emitted from LEDs that are placed around the lenses. There are three kinds of surveillance technology that is used for surveillance at night or under low-light conditions, and understanding them will let you pick the most appropriate one for your particular requirements.
Low-light Imaging. These types of surveillance cameras use image processing technology in order to produce the image in real-time in dim light conditions. There are two types of cameras that use this technology: EMCCD cameras and Integrating CCD cameras. EMCCD cameras or Electron Multiplication CCD cameras use highly sensitive CCD detectors that strengthen the signal of the image on the chip while still in the charge domain, up to a thousand times. Hence, EMCCD cameras are now the preferred choice for conducting night surveillance. And since EMCCDs can also operate in the daytime, they are the ideal choice for areas that require 24-hour surveillance. Integrating CCD cameras, on the other hand, process the signal inside the CCD itself, which cuts down visual noise levels and improves the performance of the camera in low light by up to one hundred times.
Thermal Imaging. This technology does not require ambient light to produce images since it creates images using the infrared energy that is emitted by objects. The electronic image is created based on the amount of thermal energy it detects. Another advantage of this technology is that it can also create images through visual obscurants such as fog and smoke. The images created are in black and white, with black areas representing cold objects and white areas hot ones. Some recent advanced thermal imaging cameras, however, produce images in false color, which allows you to conduct more detailed night surveillance by letting you distinguish objects that have different temperature signatures. More recent thermal cameras use cooling technology to lower the temperature of the cameras, which increases their sensitivity and increases their surveillance range. These cooled thermal cameras also are not affected by bright light sources, thus making them ideal for multi-spectral imaging. But these cameras are more expensive than the regular uncooled models, and thus, may not be ideal for all uses.
Near-Infrared Illumination. This is one of the most inexpensive of these cameras used for night surveillance. Near-infrared illumination cameras use detectors that are sensitive to near invisible infrared radiation and are used in combination with an infrared illuminator. These types of cameras are most frequently used in perimeter surveillance where they combine with other technologies such as motion detectors and intelligent scene analysis gadgets to create an effective low-light surveillance system. The types of near-infrared illumination cameras available include LED-type illuminators, laser types that use infrared laser diodes and filtered incandescent lights. One major advantage of these systems, apart from their low costs, is that they can eliminate shadows and identify letters and symbols as well as faces.
