Our fathers mean the world to us and its only right that we find the time to celebrate the unique role they play in our lives. No longer just the traditional financial provider, fatherhood now involves being part of every facet of the child's life. Whether it's problem solving or just being a playmate Dad's duties are never ending. Whether you're a parent or not you can appreciate the hard work and commitment that goes into fatherhood. So that's why we as a country decided upon a day we call Father's Day.
Father's Day is held on the third Sunday of June in the United Kingdom. It is a day to honour fathers and father figures, such as grandfathers and fathers-in-law. Many people make a special effort to visit their fathers or to send them a card or gifts.
The idea of a special day to honour fathers and celebrate fatherhood was introduced from the United States. A woman named Sonora Smart Dodd was inspired by the American Mother's Day celebrations to plan a day to recognise fathers and all their dedication. Father's Day has been celebrated in June since 1910 in the USA. The celebrations in the United Kingdom are thought to have been inspired by the American custom of Father's Day. This is in contrast to Mother's Day, which has a very different history in the United States and the United Kingdom.
However some believe that the idea of Father's Day may originate in pagan sun worship. Some branches of paganism see the sun as the father of the universe. Since the summer solstice happens around the identical time of year as Father's Day, some people see a connection between the two. Whatever its origins Father's Day is now an integral part of the calendar year.
The day itself is not a bank holiday, in terms of public life it counts as a regular Sunday. Which of course means the public transport system will run as normal. Also local establishments such as pubs and restaurants will operate within their normal Sunday hours. This usually leads to them being very busy as treating Dad to a meal or pint is a very popular way of spoiling him. However most people opt to get their old man a gift too.
This is where a personalised gift can play an important part in the day's affairs. It gives a chance to leave a unique message on a wide range of products. For example an nice engraved tankard or keyring makes a lovely gift. Other gift ideas could include a personalised wallet or pen. Personalised gifts are becoming more popular than ever with Father's day a great time to get one.
So this Father's Day show your father how much you care. Show him how much you appreciate his efforts. Treat him, on this day, to show you acknowledge the roles he plays and has played in shaping your life. For helping you ride a bike, helping you with your maths homework and driving you from A to B, it's time to care for him. So make him a meal, take him for a pint and get him a personalised gift with a unique message expressing your gratitude and love.
