What do you do for a living?
How many times have you been asked what do you do for a living? Probably countless times.
What do you do for a living? is asked in numerous situations. Let's examine this question and find suitable ways to best answer it.
What do you do for a living or is it really what do you do to make money?
What are people really interested in, when they ask this question?
Are they genuinely interested in what you do? thus being intrigued to find out more about you as a person.
Are they trying to find out, what income bracket you fit into? thus deciding whether to continue their association with you.
Do they want to know if you work at all and if not why not? thus determining your ambition.
Are they asking as a conversation ice breaker? but not really interested in your response.
Is it part of a routine chat up line?
If you have a well paid job, that you are lucky enough to enjoy and be passionate about, your response will roll of your tongue with great pleasure and delight.
No matter what the situation, when you are asked what do you do for a living? you are being interviewed and your people skills being tested.
Have your answer ready and rehearsed. There are many ambiguous answers that leave the person asking the question non the wiser. Worse still, they probably think who gives a damn.
The normal response is, I'm a consultant, administrator, analyst, manager, supervisor, engineer, the list is endless. With this kind of answer, you need to follow up with specifics or an explanation that the ordinary person, who may not be in your industry understands. That's if they are still interested.
A more effective way, is to explain what you do first, then give your title. Let me use myself as an example.
"I help people who want to make an additional income, make money on the internet and achieve their dreams. I'm an internet marketer"
You see what I have done, I am selling myself and making myself sound interesting with a brief explanation, then my title. You could almost say I sound like an advert. That's because I am selling myself as a solution to a problem.
What problem do you fix or solution do you provide in your job or company? No matter how insignificant you feel it is. Every job is important.
"I keep the streets clear of debris for the health and safety of the public, I'm a street technician"
Question: What job have I just described? Answer: A road sweeper.
Be creative, make yourself sound interesting. In life you network with different people from different walks of life, you never know who you will meet. That person could change your life forever, they might give you your dream opportunity, you might end up marrying that person.
Who knows what the future holds, all from giving a unique answer to what do you do for a living?
So be creative, create that perfect response that will spark curiosity and encourage the recipient to find out more about you.
