Okay, I know this is an embarrassing topic to talk about, so I'm going to just let'er rip. Gas, flatulence, wind, cutting the cheese, anal acoustics ... Well you get the drift.
Why am I talking about this? Because I have this common problem and it is because of my high protein diet. I am fit as a fiddle. I exercise one to two hours a day six days a week, eat a very healthy diet, and my body looks great, but I get crazy amounts of gas.
Causes.
I know that one reason this happens to me is because of the high protein shakes I make, plus the fact that they are made with whey protein. I know that I am a bit lactose intolerant, so that does not help either. Protein (depending the quality and source) can be harder for your body to break down and digest. For some people like me, gas and bloating happens, but on the bright side, it does give me a bit of jet propulsion whilst running.
Have this problem too? So maybe you should look at your protein intake. Could you increase your protein with lean meats instead of protein powders? And if you are lactose intolerant, you can find another source for of protein instead of whey protein. You could try soy protein (which has its own issues) or perhaps hemp. Both of these have been proven to not provide very effective muscle growth.
Individuals with lactose intolerance should select a pure whey protein isolate, which has less than 0.1 gram of lactose per tablespoon (20 grams). Research has shown that most people with lactose intolerance have no trouble taking this very small amount of lactose. Individuals with lactose intolerance should avoid whey protein concentrates as they usually contain lactose and the amount can vary greatly from product to product. To make matters more complex, there is great debate as to what is better, whey protein isolate, or whey protein concentrate. After all the research I have done, I am in the protein concentrate camp, Some people like their space loopy and some people prefer their space stringy, and some people believe in isolates and some in concentrates. So maybe I am in the camp with more gas because of a high protein diet.
So what actually causes "The Winds?".
The cause of gas pain is usually trapped air, which will escape either as flatulence or belching. My diet is full of high fiber, lots of fruits and veggies, loads of protein to build muscle, and those yummy protein shakes. Those darned high protein diets!
How to save gas - so to speak.
There are several ways you can reduce the cause of your gas problem because of a high protein diet. That extremely pungent variety for example is most likely to be the result of high protein intake. Either you are eating too much, or your body just reacts badly to that which you are eating. Eggs are known culprits, as are protein shakes; if you want to use protein supplements then be sure to read the reviews and go for one that says it doesn't cause too much 'bloating'.
Another suggestion is to avoid processed, synthetic foods and choose whole, natural foods. When possible, eat nonfat or low-fat items that are also high in protein, such as reduced-fat cheese, nonfat yogurt, skim milk, tofu, soy products and lean meats.
Eating slowly is supposed to be one way to avoid gas, since indigestion is more likely to occur when you're in a rush or feeling stressed out. Also, a good walk after eating can aid the digestive process. Exercising regularly and eating small meals throughout the day instead of just a few large meals may help with the "gas shortage.".
Home remedies.
Try ginger powder. To make it work, you add just half a teaspoon with a pinch of asafoetida and some rock salt in a cup of warm water and drink it down.
You can try chewing on some fresh garlic slices (soak them in lemon juice to make them tastier) and this should work well after meals and for keeping vampires way from you at night (and most likely your spouse too!) So you have to judge what is worse, the gas or the breath!
I can't recommend Brandy, but I have read that Brandy can work well when mixed into a cup of warm water before bed. At least it might help you sleep better. I have also read that peppermint oil can help too.
Each of the above help flatulence because they contain menthol that 'soothes' the digestive muscle and aiding in digestion. This should help any flatulence caused by problems absorbing or digesting certain foods from a high protein diet.
So what have we learned about the high protein diet?
Diet is closely linked with flatulence, so the best flatulence remedy is usually to try altering your diet. Even if you don't want to eat less protein or fat as described above, simply avoiding certain foods can work wonders. Foods that are particularly bad for flatulence include: beans (and you know the joke about that), Brussels sprouts, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, bread, cheese, carbonated drinks including some alcoholic beverages, rice, bananas, citrus, butter and some yogurts. By cutting down on these items it might help.
For me, I am stuck between Scylla and Charybdis, but I am willing to put up with "The Winds" for the otherwise healthy body so I will continue with my high protein diet. (And so far, the wife has not kicked me out of the house yet).
