Charlie Byrd was birthed on September 16, 1925 in Chuckatuck, Virginia and started to play the guitar at the age of 9. Charlie Byrd's very first professional job was in a stage band at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute.
In 1950 Charlie Byrd, now a citizen of Washington, D.C., was determined to commit himself to the classical guitar. He tutored on guitar along with Sophocles Papas and theory and harmony with musicologist Thomas Simmons. Charlie Byrd likewise joined a master class provided by classic guitar virtuoso Andres Segovia in Sienna, Italy. After his return to the USA Charlie Byrd traveled for a brief while as the guitarist with The Woody Herman Band. Yet it was his passion of the classical guitar that would eventually bring his name to the forefront of jazz supporters all over the globe.
Charlie Byrd had at one time chosen to quit jazz, but after some experimenting around he put together his historic jazz 3 piece group including himself on classic guitar, Keeter Betts on bass, and Bertel Knox on drums. They played sessions most nights of the week to crammed audiences at Charlie Byrd's Washington jazz club "The Showboat Lounge". The vast majority of the music played by his 3 piece group was jazz, but Charlie Byrd additionally typically featured a number of classic guitar solos as an integral part of the program.
This new 3 piece group which included Charlie Byrd's original fingerstyle jazz guitar made a substantial effect on the jazz audiences. In 1961 the USA State Department paid for a tour for Charlie Byrd's trio to South America. During this tour the idea struck him to mix jazz improvisation and harmony along with the samba and various other popular Brazilian tempos. After his return to the USA in 1962, Charlie Byrd made a historical best selling recording with saxophonist Stan Getz.
In spite of the fact that a few years previously Bud Shank and Laurindo Almeida's quartet had produced similar record albums called 'Brazilliance', Charlie Byrd's choice of pieces along with many tunes by top Brazilian guitarist/composers Antonio Carlos Jobim, Luiz Bonfa, Joao Gilberto and others showed to be a winning formula. Their terrific melodies and harmonies helped obtain substantial commercial success for their very first record album. The unique combination of Stan Getz's saxophone and Charlie Byrd's nylon string classic guitar noted the beginning of a fantastic bossa nova upsurge in the USA and eventually throughout the remainder of the globe.
In 1965 Charlie Byrd was selected to play for President Lyndon Johnson at The White House. Charlie Byrd proceeded to keep a prominent profile in the jazz guitar community and over the years he toured along with his own trio and also with The Great Guitars, a very popular band which initially consisted of jazz guitarists Barney Kessel and Herb Ellis.
