The Egyptian coastal cities of Hurghada and Sharm El-Sheikh are two of the most popular destinations of luxury private yacht cruises in Red Sea. The imaginary line between these two cities serves as the dividing marker between the main body of the Red Sea and the smaller Gulf of Suez along the western coast of the Sinai Peninsula. Although there are other areas throughout Egypt that have direct access via private cruising to the Red Sea, these two cities are renowned for their appeal to foreign tourists, particularly recreational scuba divers.
Hurghada, located at the western side of the mouth of the Gulf of Suez, is Egypt's second largest Red Sea coastal city. The many beaches, the expanding commercial district, and the year-round temperate climate contribute to the city's standing as a major tourism center. Because of the climate, the waters just off Hurghada are generally calm and clear and are thus ideal for scuba diving, snorkeling, deep sea fishing, and other watersports.
Perhaps the most famous dive site in the waters off Hurghada is the Abu Nuhas coral reef which has become the final resting place of at least 7 different ships. One of the wrecks is that of the SS Carnatic, a British steamship that sank in 1869 and was not rediscovered until 1984. Just beyond Abu Nuhas in the same waters off Hurghada lie two other shipwrecks that have also become popular with divers. One is of the EL Mina, an Egyptian Navy minesweeper that was sunk during the 1967 Six-Day War, while the other is of the SS Rosalie Moller, a British merchant vessel that was sunk during World War 2.
Sharm El-Sheikh (Arabic for "bay of the governor") lies at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula. Its viability as a tourist center saw the establishment of hotels run by known brands such as Hyatt, Marriott, Four Seasons, and Ritz-Carlton along with some other lesser-known hotels and inns that cater mainly to budget travelers. There are also golf courses and an assortment of contemporary shopping and dining establishments. All these and other attributes make Sharm El-Sheikh a favorite destination of passengers on luxury private yacht cruises in Red Sea.
Sharm El-Sheikh doesn't boast as much shipwrecks as Hurghada, but the natural diving environment is no less impressive. Its most famous dive site is the one just off Ras Muhammad National Park which is rich in coral reefs and different fish species. Divers who visit Ras Muhammad in the summer, specifically from mid-June to mid-August, will come across even bigger schools of fish than they are likely to see in the same area at any other time of the year. Some lucky divers may even get to swim alongside turtles, morays, stingrays, hammerhead sharks, and whale sharks.
For tourists who wish to go on luxury private yacht cruises in Red Sea, visiting these two Egyptian coastal cities is highly recommended. The opportunities for scuba diving are numerous as are those for more casual watersports and other tourist activities such as sightseeing.
