Just like there is "no crying in baseball," there's not supposed to be guilt from eating. Well, if you have lost a bunch a weight like I did, then you know what I am talking about; or if you have a weight problem then you know what I am talking about.
So what is this all about? Today we had lunch with friends who did not really know how "clean" our diet had become, so I was a good guest and I ate some things that are really no longer "on my menu" so to speak. (BTW, it's not like I was eating Ding Dongs, or potato chips. I had a couple of Macaroons and some non-whole wheat matzah) I don't like to use the word "diet", because I am not on a diet; I have just changed my eating habits for the better. I'm talking about "eating healthy".
Diet vs. Healthy Eating
Diets are for people who are trying to lose weight. Hopefully, they are doing some sort of physical activity and eating a reduced calorie diet in order to burn more calories, therefore burning fat, and thus lose weight. There are plenty of people out there eating crazy things in hope of losing weight, which we all know will come right back if they don't change their lifestyle too. Diets are not meant for the long term. Diets are short term solution (if they don't create more problems). No wonder people feel the guilt from eating when they cheat on their diet.
Healthy eating is different. I am not trying to lose weight, I am fueling my body to do the exercise I need to keep my heart, lungs, and body strong and flexible, and also provide the nutrients my body needs to keep all the internal systems working at peak performance. A strong, well feed body helps prevent injury, helps recovery if needed, and fights off diseases. See the difference? Healthy eating is a long term solution, it becomes a life style change.
So what is Clean eating?
If your great grand-parents looked at the label, and they did not know what is was, don't eat it! Believe it or not, you can eat wonderful, delicious meals! Don't get me wrong, we need certain type of sugars just to live, but it does not have to be in every food we eat.
What is this guilt?
You know, I still can't believe that my 49 year old body is in such good shape. I have worked so hard to become healthy and fit, that anytime I eat just one thing "not on the menu" I feel this horrible guilt, and I am afraid that I will just blow up to the old middle aged fat guy I used to be. Beachbody gave me a new lease on life, and that is why I feel the guilt of eating.
Yes, I do know that three little coconut macaroons aren't going to turn me back to the way I was, and Tony Horton and Shaun T freely admit they have little treats on the odd occasion, but my over-active Jewish guilt gland is rather relentless. I have to give it kudos for helping me achieve what I have achieved, but it just won't just stop working once I reached my "goal weight".
Here's to my guilt-gland, my genius of a cook wife, and to Beachbody for getting me to where I am today. And yes, I guess I will always feel guilt of eating just to keep the body I have today.
