Because pruning is both an art and a science, learning it will not be that easy. There are guide books that you can read, but practicing on your own plants is somehow a scary thing (imagine accidentally damaging your century-old bonsai tree). Nonetheless, starting with the basics is the best way to go.
before anything else, learning the different types of pruning and the proper tools to be used will give you a wider idea why pruning is used and what it is used for. Here are the different types.
Reduction
Like how you understood it, reduction is done to reduce the height of tall trees, most often to give way to electrical lines and other high-hanging utility cables. It is also done to strengthen the tree against gusts and storms.
A particular technique is used here to save the tree's form by cutting terminal branches and leaving the work to lateral branches that are big enough to support nutrition to the smaller branches and leaves. Lateral branches that are at least one-third in diameter of the main ones should be used.
In tree reductions, saws are commonly used rather than thinner pruners.
Crown reduction, a variation of this type, is used specifically on fruit-bearing trees to clear branches that are blocking the light from enhancing the quality of fruits.
Thinning
Also known as extreme pruning, thinning is commonly used on shrubs and other flowering plants with naturally thicker shoots. More so, this is the final solution when a large portion of plant or tree has already been affected rotting, disease, insect or drying. It is called extreme because thinning involves cutting of the entire limb and branches trailing back to the origin.
Thinning is not necessarily used on sick plants or trees. It can also be used to stimulate outgrowths, especially of flowers and fruits. Because this is a drastic method, loppers or pruning shears with long handles are the best tool.
Raising
This type of pruning is used to clear the lower part of a tree or plant to give way to a road, walkway, establishment or landscape garden underneath. Many landscape artists prefer this type of pruning because it maximizes space and at the same time, enhance aesthetic appeal.
In raising, regular loppers are used for more controlled cutting. For bush sculpting, a sharp garden knife will work wonderfully.
Topping
Topping is most often used on large trees rather than on shrubs. This is the most severe form of pruning because in this process, all the branches, limbs and shoots are cut off, leaving only the trunk in the process.
apparently, only saws are capable of getting the job done.
Will topping kill the tree in the process? No, as a matter of fact, the opposite will happen. Topping is sometimes necessary in pollarding young trees. Likewise, it is also used to encourage multiple branching, producing thicker foliages in the long run.
