Pruning is a horticultural practice that involves systematic elimination of potentially damaging parts, such as roots, branches, stems and buds. These parts are called potentially damaging when they are already infected with a disease that can spread to the other parts, infested with pests or are already dying due to dryness or open cuts. Pruning is also done to eliminate obstruction due to some growth without causing any damage to the plant or tree.
When it comes to pruning of trees, the process and necessary hand tools, such as loppers and saws, are a bit different as well. Since trees are naturally harder, pruning becomes more difficult to do. In this context, tree includes ornamental trees, bonsai trees and even shrubs.
Some people confuse pruning with trimming, which of course, are two different things. While pruning is systematic and scientific in a way, trimming is merely cutting unnecessary parts for beautification purposes.
If you are not sure for what and when to do pruning, here are some of its importance to help you determine its necessity.
Contain diseases
Some diseases spread through the skin while some spread internally without causing apparent damages externally. Of course, you cannot just cut damaged parts without thinking because it will leave an open cut, which can invite more pests and diseases.
Using proper pruners will prevent unnecessary cuts.
Reshape without damaging buds, flowers and fruits
Topiary is known to be the art of cutting trees. This is typically applied on ornamental plants because they only have stems and leaves to be thought about. The case is different with flowering shrubs and fruit-bearing trees, though.
Cutting already damaged parts without sacrificing connected flowers, fruits and buds, is not easy even for professionals. If you are not sure how to do it properly, better leave it to the experts.
Prevent branches from falling
Cutting dried up branches on trees will leave openings for insects. Upon learning the proper ways of pruning, you will also learn the proper ways of supporting branches using different tools, like props and strings, when cutting them, especially when they are directly connected to the trunk.
Dead-wooding
Dead-wooding is the process of letting dead parts decay back to the roots or others parts for many reasons. This practice is commonly done to preserve certain parts for later processing, like in the case of furniture making. If you have already seen a table made of dried up tree roots or a sculpture center piece made of a dried trunk, it is most likely achieved using dead-wooding.
Another reason why it is done is to let a huge tree rot naturally for easier removal later on.
Canopy thinning
Thick canopies are screaming "Welcome home insects!" They can be home to hundreds of damaging pests, and even snakes. Too much of it also blocks natural ventilation and passing of light. Overdevelopment of stems can even lower the rate of photosynthesis of leaves, which in time will cause the plant to grow sicker and dryer.
Pruning without damaging as much leaves as possible is the proper way of doing it.
