So I was flipping through my copy of New York Times best seller The 4-Hour Workweek and I came across the speed reading segment. It's one of my favorite parts of the book because I have been interested in speed reading for sometime, but more importantly it does exactly what the title suggest.
It increases not only how fast you read but also comprehension and retention which is the whole point of reading.
Have you ever read a page or even a paragraph and thought to yourself "What the hell did I just read?".
It's happened to me more times than I care to admit, but using the 10 minute method Tim Ferris laid out, I was able to take my speed reading to a whole new level. Now that beats sitting through 2 hour long classes or yotube videos any day.
If you already have the book then you should go back and read chapter 6 pages 89-90. If you don't have this book (why not?) I will outline the 10 minute technique an hopefully raise your speed reading game to the next level.
But before I do that, there is an important vision concept you need to be aware of.
How vision works.
To sum it up quickly, vision works much like a video camera in that it is a series of frames closely linked together to form a moving picture. All of it happens so fast that it is impossible to consciously follow the process.
Unfortunately this is the way we read. Remember when I talked about the moments when you read something and moments later you can't recall what was read? This is very common and it happens because we consciously try to follow the process.
Most people read word by word instead of using their peripheral vision to read so that their brains can focus on comprehension. When your reading, your brain see's a body of words in the form of a picture/frame not word by word. When you go against the brains natural instinct and read word for word you stifle it to the point where it can do nothing else except focus on one word and then the next word and the next one etc...
The very act of reading is meant so that the reader can comprehend, not so the reader can recite every word in the book one by one. It is impossible to read aloud or to yourself at the level the brain operates while reading so that internal voice you use to read has to go to.
And with that, let's jump into the lesson.
How to Read 200% Faster in 10 minutes: Speed reading like Tim Ferriss
1. Two Minutes: Using a pen or finger, trace under each line as you read as fast as possible. Reading is a series of jumping snap shots called saccades, and using a visual guide (pen/finger) prevents regression.
2. Three Minutes: Begin each line focusing on the third word in from the first word, and end each line focusing on the third word in from the last word. This makes use of the peripheral vision we forget to use when we read.
Ex: I ran to the store on my way home to get some milk.
In this sentence, you would only focus on the third word in from the first which is "to" and the third word in from the last which is "get". The remaining words would be pick up by your peripheral vision.
As you get better at this, move in further and further from each side so that your focus would look something like this...
Ex: I ran to the store on my way home to get some milk.
3. Two Minutes: Once comfortable indenting 3-5 words from both sides, attempt to take only two snapshots per line on the first and last indented words.
4. Three Minutes: Practice reading to fast for comprehension but with good technique (the above three techniques) for five pages prior to reading at a comfortable speed. This will heighten perception and reset your speed limit, much like how 50 mph normally feels fast but seems like slow motion if you drop down from 70 mph on the freeway.
How to calculate reading speed.
All of this counts for nothing if your not getting better, therefore you need to know how to calculate your reading speed in words per minute (wpm).
To do this, add up the number of words in ten lines and divide by ten to get average words per line. Multiply this by the number of lines per page and you have the average words per page.
Ex: If you initially read 1.25 pages in one minute at 330 average words per page, thats 412.5 words per minute. If you then read 3.5 pages after training, it's 1,155 words per minute and consider yourself in the top 1% of the world's fastest readers.
So that's the speed reading process according to Tim Ferris' book. If you haven't read the book, you need to get yourself a copy. It's not just a "great read" or a "must read", this book will change your life. At the very least it will severely alter your perspective about the mainstream 40 hour week (60-80 hours nowadays).
