The definition of Healing is the restoring of health to the sick; the making sound or whole that which is broken or injured; the curing of various diseases and defects; the returning of a person to the general state of well- being. The words used in the Bible both in Hebrew and Greek describe such healing both in {a literal and figurative |a figurative and literal} sense. The Hebrew verb ra pha and the Greek verb is i a'o mai are the principal words in the Bible that describe these words.
With that in mind what of today. Is miraculous faith healing still a good possibility for those who can find no medical cure? Jesus performed healing miracles. Faith healers today claim to imitate him. How should we view their claims? Notice how the healing done by Jesus had God's backing, "WE HAVE seen strange things today!" Yes, the observers were impressed. A severely paralyzed man had been healed before their very eyes. The healer told the man: "Get up and pick up your little bed and be on your way home." And the man did just that! He was no longer paralyzed. No wonder that those present "began to glorify God"! (Luke 5:18 -26) This cure, performed by Jesus Christ almost 2,000 years ago, very clearly had God's approval.
Now the definition of Faith healing is defined as "a method of treating diseases by prayer and exercise of faith in God." The Encyclopedia Britannica affirms: "The history of faith healing in Christianity began with the astonishing personal ministries of Jesus and the apostles." Yes, Jesus effected outstanding cures. Do faith healers today perform miracles as he did?
Let's focus on the word Faith since it is essential to our discussion. Was faith a necessary requirement for Jesus to perform a healing miracle? Some seem to think so, According to Black's Bible Dictionary, Jesus "specified as a prerequisite for his miracles of healing." Jesus never demanded that a sick person have faith before he would heal them, although faith was needed it was on the part of the healer but not necessary on the part of the sick person. This can be seen in the failure of Christ's disciple's to heal an epileptic boy. Notice how Jesus responded after healing the boy he told the disciples why they had been unable to heal him. "He said to them: 'Because of your little faith.'"-- Matthew 17:14 -20. Further evidence of not having to have faith to be healed was when Jesus healed a lame man who did not even know who Jesus was, certainly his faith was not in evidence. In most cases they had to {come and ask|ask and come} before he healed them. However, no confession of faith was required for the miracle to be performed. It is true that these people had to show a degree of belief in Jesus that caused them to approach him, however according to Matthew 8:16, 17, Jesus "cured all who were faring badly.".
Would you say that the enemies of Jesus had faith in him? Of course not but on the night of his arrest, Jesus restored the severed ear of the high priest's servant, although this man was one of the group of Jesus' enemies who had come to arrest him. (Luke 22:50, 51).
Modern Healings Like Those of Jesus?
Notice the reports from around the world, and see if they compare with how Jesus healed in the first century. For example, an estimated 70,000 attended a meeting in São Paulo, Brazil, where two healers 'trampled upon hundreds of eyeglasses thrown by the audience, promising the credulous owners restoration of their eyesight.' One of the healers honestly acknowledged in an interview: "I can not say that all those sick ones for whom we pray will be cured. It depends on their faith. If a person believes, he will be cured." He blamed any failure to be healed on a lack of faith on the part of the sick one. Remember though, as we saw earlier, that Jesus blamed a failure to heal on the lack of faith of those doing the healing!
One healer promised to cure cancer and paralysis. What was the result? Veda magazine reported on the event stating the promise evidently was not achieved at. {This is how the magazine reported how the man conducted himself see if you agree with this.|If you agree with this, this is how the magazine reported how the man conducted himself see.} "During nearly two hours, entertained the audience with sermons, prayers, screams, singing-- even using blows, with a view to expelling demons lodging in the bodies of the faithful. At the end he threw his necktie and his handkerchief to the entranced audience and passed a plate in order to collect voluntary contributions.'" Jesus and his apostles never asked for money for miraculous healings, and they never engaged in such theatrics. In view of the two instances stated above would you not agree that such Martin faith healers are not dealing with Jesus did. And it would be very difficult to see that God would approve of what they are doing.
There are several crucial differences between faith healers today and those reported in the Bible. Tid Jesus and his disciples ever charge for their cures? "You received free, give free," taught Jesus. (Matthew 10:8) Thus they followed the example set by Elisha, who refused a gift from a man named Naaman whom Elisha cured of leprosy. (2 Kings 5:1, 14-16) Therefore, when faith healers charge for their services, they violate this Scriptural precedent.
Reason to be cautious.
There definitely a need to be cautious, in most cases outright fraud appears to be involved The Herald, a newspaper of Zimbabwe, reported on three individuals whom a famous faith healer heralded as having been cured. The paper exposed this as a fraud: "One child can still neither {hear nor speak|speak nor hear}; one child was {never deaf or dumb|dumb or never deaf}; and a woman, who was just deaf, still can not hear." It is important that we follow this Scriptural warning "Satan himself keeps transforming himself into an angel of light" in an attempt to deceive. (2 Corinthians 11:14) At 2 Thessalonians 2:9, 10, Paul further explained: "The lawless one's presence is according to the operation of Satan with every powerful work and lying {signs and portents|portents and signs} and with every unrighteous deception for those who are perishing." So beware! Faith healing often involves demonic powers! "I do not want you to become sharers with the demons," warned Paul. "You can not be drinking the cup of Jehovah and the cup of demons."-- 1 Corinthians 10:20, 21.
How can individuals free themselves from mistaken trust in faith healers a person that his zeal can seek the aid of qualified physician or therapist thus avoiding any dabbling in the minutes back yours or in the quackery that is so common in many lands today more importantly he can pray not for a miraculous cure but for the needed wisdom to deal with the illness or problem he may be having.
