If you are planning to start going on hiking trips as a hobby or for health reasons, then you better get yourself a good survival knife because you will never know when you will ever find yourself in a compromised position while out there in the great outdoors. There are plenty of stories about people who got lost in the woods and was only able to get rescued because they have with them all of the basic tools that they need; and that includes a good survival knife. If you do not know what to look for in a survival knife, then you should continue reading this article so that you will know what you need to look out for while you are shopping for one.
The first thing that you need to keep in mind when it comes to survival knives is that form takes a back seat to function every time. You should not buy a knife just because you think it looks "cool" and menacing since you are not buying it just to show it off, you are getting one because you are actually planning on using it. Most of the good knives out there are not the prettiest of the bunch, but you can be sure that when you need them the most, you can expect that they will not be letting you down.
You should also take a good look at the blades of the knives when looking at several different models. Generally, for survival knives a blade thickness of between an eighth of an inch and three-sixteenths of an inch is recommended; any thinner and the blade will not have the strength to do its job, any thicker and it will be too heavy for you to carry around comfortably.
Now there might be a couple of people who would disagree, but you should choose a survival knife that has a fixed blade. Folding knives may be easier to carry around, but because they contain moving parts in them there is a chance that they will break after some time, plus you cannot really use it with all your strength because the lock might break and the knife may cause more harm than good. A fixed blade knife has a tang (the part of the blade that is embedded in the handle) which gives the knife more strength than folding blades, so they can put up with more abuse, which you can expect to give your knife when you find yourself in an emergency situation.
These are just some of the things that you need to know when you are shopping for good survival knives. If you need more information, then you should ask around your local outdoors supplies store or read through websites that specialize in survival in the wild. Always keep in mind that your survival knife may mean the difference between life and death, so you should take your time and consider all of your options before settling on just one.
